look in the bottom corner of almost any piste map from anywhere in the world, tucked in amongst the trees is the name James Nehues. He seems to have designed almost all piste maps I've seen (except for the wacky Japanese ones). Anyone have any info on the guy?

I seem to recall an article indicating that he was retiring, or something like that?
His maps certainly have a certain something, that's for sure. He really knows how to capture the mountains both in a beautiful and informative way.

He could certainly work on some of those Japanese trails maps, that's for sure!

James Niehues is a bit of a snow industry hero of mine. Modern trail maps owe much to him, even the ones he didn't do.

That's TC frontside - it's Saddle Basin with the chutes of Motatapu Basin in left-hand foreground. It was not so nice there today, after a warm wet night. But mild & sunny, so not all bad :)

I observe I think I have 10 of his trail maps hanging up on the walls here at DSNS HQ. They get put up after I have skied the resort. It helps that he gets a lot of work from Vail.

I also observe that I want more ;)

He did announce a retirement a few years ago. It was soon after he started his Facebook page. But what happened is that he simply got a pickier about which snow mountain assignments he chose to work on. It's been fascinating watching a painting evolve by following his posts on FB. He just finished revising the Alta painting that will be used for the new trail maps for 2017-18 that will include the new Supreme lift (replaces Supreme triple and Cecret double) that will start at Alf's. He also did a major update for Big Sky relatively recently.

When I first started reading up about Niehues, I was surprised to notice that my little hill in northern VA (near Washington DC) had him paint Massanutten. I guess because Massanutten has been around for over 40 years, he wasn't too busy to take small assignments at some point.

By the way, just joined recently. Some people may recognize me from other ski forums. :)

SO, just this morning I was checking out Tremblant Resort's web site. It's in east side Canada.
The trail map of course, is a Niehues product....he sure does get around. Looks like a fun mountain too

Japanese trail map, showing the only exit from a ski area.
Took us a while to find it on a low viz day.

Unfortunately free 3rd party image hosting on photobucket no longer works so we can't see your trail map :(
You'll need to pay photobucket for this 'privilege' or find an alternative file hosting site. Paid membership to ski.com.au also lets you upload images as part of the service. I tripped over this issue as well.

This guy messes with my head. I spend years using topography maps to find my round, then I have to learn to translate his whoopdeedoop projection into the real world. It does not work and gets really confusing when you try and use a compass.

    Nice wall paper,

Oh yeah, he gets paid. Used to be that for big resort he hadn't painted before, he spent time there taking photos from the sky. Obviously he didn't pay for those expenses either. My impression from reading his interviews was that small place could send him pictures to work from. These days, I doubt it's about the money, it's whether or not Niehues will accept a project. He can afford to be picky.

If you look on his website, there are also gorgeous summer time paintings of national parks and such.

I've always found that a "trail map" is not really a map, but a diagram that helps but really doesn't make much sense until after the first run or two at a new ski area/resort. One reason Niehues was happy to get the chance to update his Alta painting was that he knew the original version was weak for the trails over off Supreme, including Catherine's. That's what changed the most in 2015. With the new lift going being built in 2017, he got to update that section even a little bit more.

The new trail map for Big Sky is much, much better for the backside of Lone Peak. That was one of the big projects that Neihues did after his retirement announcement. Given the lift enhancements Boyne had in mind at the time, his commission was not big money in the overall scheme of things.

Aspen does not have Niehues paintings on which to base their trail maps. Would make a big difference for Highlands and Snowmass.

Think london Tube maps. You can't use them for surface navigation but but they are a diagram of the network.
