    Hi,
this year my 10 year old wants badly to compete in the Victorian Insterschools at Buller. We wanted to invite some other kids from the primary school to participate too but I'm struggling to work out which events they are eligible for and which division they would fit into.

I've had a read but am struggling to find anywhere on the website the explanation of the Divisions as listed in the event schedule here:
    http://www.vicinterschools.com.au/important-documents-0

Can someone point me to where they are defined or educate me.

    Thanks.

    It's based on school year.

    11/12 is div 1
    9/10 is div 2
    Keep going downwards...

Alpine giant slalom is your starting point.

    Div 1 = yr 11 & 12
    Div 2 = yr 9 & 10

and so on and so forth

    Division 1 Years 11 & 12
    Division 2 Years 9 & 10
    Division 3 Years 7 & 8
    Division 4 Years 5 & 6
Division 5 Year 4 and below
    [snap, snap and snap]
just a note on that - it's not strictly age-defined, and kids can compete in the division above theirs

as a former Interschools parent and team manager, may I say that I highly recommend it?
don't miss the opportunity to be a course official, an excellent experience
it's supposedly an obligation but many misguided parents worm out of it - I've even heard some of them boasting about it while drinking coffee at the terminal during their kids' races

There is now a division 6 as well for Prep-Yr 2, with Div 5 being yrs 3-4. Last year was just Alpine, this year brings in Skier cross. Not sure if they've extended it to snowboarding as yet. Mine started in Div 5, and this year has finally hit Div 1. I think I'll miss it when it's all over.

There's defnitely no Div 6 snowboard events. You will probably notice the crazy parents and kids with their expensive gear and coaches. My kids do it for the fun and challenge, not for the competition.

I guess they will bring in Div 6 once they get more snowboarding numbers, and it has grown a lot since mine started doing SB in Div 4. For a few years there she was doing everything except cross country - 5 events

The etiquette in western Canada is that parents of visiting athletes volunteer for the event. Most clubs are fairly small, they can put together an organising committee and have everything ready, but they depend on getting lots of bodies on race day for gate keeping, hand timing, course maintenance, etc. Then of course when you take your kids to another mountain to race, you reciprocate. Simple concept that works well, no way anyone could run decent races without volunteer workers. And there's a lot of camaraderie among race workers, lunch provided and usually some beer or wine afterwards.

    not bad even then
I recall very poor conditions at the top of Thredbo, marshalling Div 1 Snowboard - 70kph winds etc
the kids were fantastic, cooperative and cheerful in the dreadful conditions

Mt Hotham race club has a 2 week holiday program available.Might be handy if you guys are around to join in and meet other similar families to yours and have the kids sharpen up on their skiing skills.

Volunteering at Lake Louise NorAm DH back in December, delaying a few last moments before shutting off the truck, donning a headlamp and clicking into skis.

I did the Australian interschools in the mid 90s. Was a lot of fun.

I wasn't the best skier at the time and I remember a massive whipeout on the GS. I got a bit better after that and placed in the slalom top 20 the following year.

My brother competed in the snowboard in the first year that was offered

I wouldn't call it a lot of fun as an officiating parent standing in the rain at buller watching 200 kids ski in slush. just saying.

Pshaw. Top of the course softy. The real heroes were the gatekeepers scattered down the course. Who were miserable.

You mean the coloured blobs that occasionally went past in the murk? Is that what they were?

One of the happiest announcements I have heard is that they had cancelled the second run.

It's something that really pissed me off about NSW Interschools. You have an 8 year old. You are there as the only parent. You make these things clear, but volunteer for any task that fits in with those constraints. So they give you a task that means that your 8 year old is floating in unsupervised limbo until your task is complete - usually gatekeeping. So you don't turn up after letting them know and telling them why. Then some officious alickadoo berates you.

I was always sole parent with mine, too but our teams were usually fairly good at organising coverage of each other's kids
we were lucky to have enough parents to do that

This is when an old school Drizabone is your new best friend! Mine travels to every race with me, very rare it comes out of the bag but most glad to have it when needed.

    Ah yes .... Interschools

7 winters of joyful parental communing with a bunch of kids that made and won Nationals every year but one. The great highs and lows of "schools+parents+kids". The soaring euphoria and grinding drudgery of "competing", "skills development" and "representing school".

Blue Cow and Hotham for the winning blizzards and Falls Creek for the most glorious annual cluster**** and accompanying monsoon ever. It is however a lovely drive .....

We got some awesome skiing in after, before, on the way and made some very excellent and generous skier friends.

    Chocolate, carry lots of chocolate.
    Smile, smile a lot.

I know some snowsports parents can be god-awful but luckily none associated with my teams were unbearable
in year 5 a couple of mothers came close - convinced their kids were world-cup standard, joined them up to race club, rostered their regular weekend trips to the snow etc
most of us were content to see our offspring having a great time

My daughter was in a team with the daughter of possibly the most notorious nutcase parent of his time. He drove us nuts, insisting on us getting special race tunes and waxes and constant ranting. We ran into him at Sun Peaks once, and I suggested that our daughters could spend some time free skiing together. Nup. He had his kids in specialist race training for their entire 2 weeks in the resort. Not a day off.

As far as I know, both his daughters have stopped skiing. They never had a chance to find out it is fun.

@dawooduck 's team had current World Cup #3 Mogul skier (mens) - so unless any of your kids were skiing with Bitt Cox, I think he's us all covered. They're (parents) not that crazy - pretty good fun too hang out with actually.

I'm heading up to Whistler in the morning for our last day of the season and planning to catch up and say hi to all the mogul team who are spring training here

it is a team event and we did start in Yr5-6 :p

We certainly did have a strong crew from only 3 families, pretty unique for a random bunch of Real CC crew and then .... off went team duck to the strongest skiing school in the nation

I will have you know I was a very good bag carrier, team driver, ski waxer, child minder, chocolate dispenser, table sharer, ski host and ... poacher of recently vacated training courses :D:thumbs:

Amazing when we look back on those years of random happenings.

Interschools, a crazy mad adventure indeed.

I never really encountered too much "parental angst", well except when I "table shared" :D

At the Real CC school the two main families where no drama, very self contained, fun and generous and at the #1 boarding school #1 son and I just went with the flow.

If you focus on the ski adventure of you and your child then any angst never really penetrates. I do recall mentioning to the current world #3 when he was in Yr 5 ..."maybe not so big" ... for the team !!!

Spending 8 days with #1 son, who was on his L plates, in that last Yr11 journey to Falls Creek via Perisher for some sneaky training and mind setting was just sensational. Staying with Jindy friends, poaching a near deserted BC spring moguls track, road tripping over the Alpine way to Falls, staying in a lodge recommended by @currawong, having @scottski share some gear, meeting @luvthabumps, cracking an excellent run and taking home the team medal amongst so many familiar faces was a very excellent time. Topped that off with #1 son driving us back home via Jindy on those VIC/NSW glorious mountain country roads.

Team duck, just me and the boy  and some very special generous skier people.

    just do it

Sounds like an expensive 2 weeks. As after that I would be pested to death for:
    - Race skis, special mogul skis,
    - POC helmet
...... and probably even a snowboard, because "every one else has one".

That said, we did Hotham Race club for a season when she was 5. It was a fantastic way to meet other like minded families and make friends with other kids.

What you say is all true.
Inter schools is a lot of fun for the kids, rain ,snow or shine and a money maker for the host mountain.
SSA children's series races are the real deal national alpine ski races however the inter-schools plays a very important role for the schools and the majority of kids.
After all its all about the kids having a go and having fun which inter-schools achieves.

a few years ago I was surprised to hear that Interschools organisers were having difficulty persuading some resorts to participate
    strange - I'd reckon it must be a money-spinner

a few years ago there was a "war" over who was going to get to host them.

I don't think there's ever been a situation where it was difficult to persuade a mountain to host them. Share them, maybe, but not host

In NSW it is regionals and state are rotated between Perisher and Thredbo. Nationals, if in NSW is always at Perisher, which makes sense as they are the ones most likely to still have skiable snow in September. In alternate years nationals is held at Buller, which from my sample size of 2 visits, does not have skiable snow in September. 2013 was ridiculous.
