Rather than posting in the 2014 thread, thought it might be better to begin a new one for 2015 flights.

I have booked my Qantas flight Melb - LAX for early Feb, returning later March for $1239, which I thought was not a bad deal.

just punch in a date and do a search
click on the 3 days either side tab and scroll the dates and you will see them later in feb
at least they were there yesterday - maybe they have gone now
there were still some fares at mid $900 and still good value
oh yeh put the promo code in NAM300

Oooh that is tempting, Alaska Air has loads of flights from Seattle and Vancouver to various Hawaiian destinations and I have a crapload of Alaska points too. But as usual I am time poor and points rich. Chances of time off for a trip to Oz this winter... buckley's.

For those on the Aussie side of the Pacific and with notions for a trip to western Canada or US, Alaska Air is a decent no frills carrier, well established with the best network of flights in and out of the PNW region. I've used them lots over the years, they're solid performers for a fair price. If you're going into somewhere a bit off the US resorts beaten track like Montana or Oregon, they're the best choice by miles.

prior to SEP11 flights were often that cheap. Unfortunately Canada 3000, the 1st long hail low cost, failed after SEP11.

There are about 2 seats per flight maximum at these low fares. Some flights have no seats at this price.

I thought the same, but I eventually found about 20 seats at the low price, mostly mid feb travel dates that were $879.57 return. If only I wasn't off to Japan... oh wait..

crazy good prices BNE to YVR for $900 but factor in a 24hr LA stop over at those prices. The cheapest flights get into LAX at 23:00 and the next leg isnt till 22:00 the next day. Could work well if you want to spend a day in LA but if not....

Why not... airport hotels at LAX are cheap and easy to get to. Rent a car is really close to hotels, get a convertible and drive up the coast to Santa Barbara and back, or Santa Monica pier, or Venice Beach, or all of the above. Priceline a hotel, can usually get 4 star for around $80.

My son has a flight booked for our return from Big Sky (Bzn-SLC-Las) on Delta, then he has a Southwest from LAS -LAX then he resumes his Delta from LAX -Syd. Hope this makes sense. He has decided (with the infinite wisdom of someone who is 24) to get off at SLC and drive to Las. He would tell them this when checking in at Bozeman obviously. Does this constitute a "change" and therefore he's going to get slugged a change fee or by simply not using a portion is this OK?? I think not, but defer to the experts.

Are the internal flights on Delta ticketed separately to the LAX-SYD leg?

If he doesn't fly SLC-LAS, the rest of the ticket will be cancelled.

Be careful - i bought a new better ticket from San Jose to Seattle and 'forfeited' my SFO-Seattle flight.

But the SFO - Seattle flight was a return. Which means they cancelled that return leg - I only found out when i tried to check in online. Cost me a bomb for the one way flight back!

I would call en inquire - don't say its a done deal just yet. See what the airline says.

But there is no other leg on that flight to cancel is there? That's why I asked if the international leg was part of the same flight.

After Las Vegas, on the same ticket is their LAX-Syd portion. Yeah, I thought that part would then be cancelled. I'll get him to check it, but I was pretty sure I'd seen someone on here say that once before. Thanks guys.

Ahh sorry I misread your previous response. There is no way I would skip that internal leg, even if someone at Delta told me it was okay. The remaining segment will be cancelled.

So based on @Astro66 posting about his deal with Delta to LAX, yesterday I snapped up 6 tickets to LAX, leaving Dec 16, returning Jan 24, for $1000 each. Pretty good! Those seats have all well and truly gone now at that price I think.

Sadly for me, I have to come home much earlier than that (9th), and I couldn't get it that cheap. Paid $1,400 for mine.

It would be hard to beat this deal from last December. Travel period was from 21/01/15 to 22/03/15

it seems that $1000 Delta/Virgin deal was a mistake. Someone entered the wrong prices.

Think it applied to Virgin flights, but booked under Delta & someone did something like entering child fares under adults.

Correction now seems to have been made.

I think with the Aussie dollar continuing to weaken against the greenback we'll see a few good Aus to USA sales throughout the year. The only question is how low can they go ? The best I've seen is $762 BNE to LAX return with Fiji Airways (Air Pacific) during low season.

yes mid Jan to late March normally but with Easter at start of April this year, end of March cheap fares sold out very fast previous April.

Normally, airlines look at when schools start back. Families want to be home day or 2 before at latest. No one wants to go at that way for a week, so normally around 17-18Jan low season fares kick in.

Things are quite a bit slower this year, so there's been some cheap fares as early as 10Jan.

Nothing left now til 12Jan, where can still get fares to LAX for $1100 ish return. Via LAX is usually the cheapest way to Vancouver. You can use Qantas frequent flyer points to fly LAX/Seattle or LAX/Vancouver (think it's 14,000 pts + about $5 to Seattle, but for Vancouver, you have to pay Canadian taxes, as crossing a border).

If you spend less than 24 hours in LA, you don't pay any baggage charges either.

$999 BNE & SYD/LAX return is back IN PEAK SEASON !!! (about $250 less for kids; all inc all taxes)

Airlines must be doing it really tough at present.

You must depart 12Jan or later. 12 Jan is peak season.

Sale ends 20 April, but suggest they might sellout way before then.

So you could do say a 12 night trip & still be back by OZ Day 26Jan. Most school start back 27, 28Jan or later.

    For more, see NOTICEBOARD.

Peak season is a good price. But I went this year. There were no such deals when I booked. Who with?

And is that direct, or with stops? Only one bag? And add extra for Melb departure.

Oh, and I'd avoid school holidays, don't need them. I prefer going a bit later in the season when snow is a generally deeper and more likely to fall. What do you have for next Feb/March?

go to noticeboard. By reducing number of flights in Feb/Mar, airlines don't need to do loss leaders to same degree.

catch is many of the best fares can't be found at online search engines.

Eg. flying one airline to a destination & another home

Eg. to LAX via Fiji & nonstop home to BNE, SYD or MEL.

In peak season this is generally the cheapest way to get to LAX with possible exception of very long transits via Asia + you get same Qantas ff pts as if going Qantas nonstop both ways.

You can't book above on Qantas or even Fiji Airways sites & can't even do it over the phone with either of these airlines.

    How much ?

BNE/LAX return - year round $1205 + taxes of around $210 & $25 Qantas "fee" for flying nonstop.

Yes you can get this sort of fare at anytime of the year, but for departures say from 20Dec-4Jan, coming home 15-24Jan you need to get in very early probably 50 weeks ahead.

Can you still get these type of fares ?

Yes, but now need to be a little date flexible, as many dates have completely sold out at these fares.

The next fare level is around $250 more, which we think is too big a price jump.

    David

We did that last time david but with work i wasn't given assurances to book that far out this time around. The other stumbling block is the missus wants to route thru san fran for a stopover rather than going direct to yvr so that will add some too i guess.

since Qantas pulled out of SFO, only airline that now flies nonstop OZ/SFO is poor old United out of SYD, however not hard to get a connection from LAX to any of 3 San fran airports SFO, OAK or SJC.

We just had a cancellation which tried to get back on, but not happening as one of the parents just got diagnosed with cancer. Will post in NOTICEBOARD.

The flights are BNE/LAX 7JAN nonstop on Qantas, back 24JAN for around $1599/adult & $1299/kid under 12. There was a group of 9 (one family going)

It is amazing the variance different flight search engines can come up with. I can see $500 differences between return flight costs on some airlines to Europe, spread across several sites. It does pay to check a bunch of them.
