Probably second best day ever with the young chap on skis. First lifts to 2:00pm, fun skiing, his skiing has improved heaps. Great dad and boy stuff.

Best day of the season so far for me. On first chair at 8am. Four in the Bluff, four in the Basin then Antons. Repeat till 3pm. Soft cold snow off piste all day. Surprised at how much available off piste considering 10 days ago everything off piste was bush. Groomers back to the bottom were very firm.

The Basin, this afternoon. Was fun, snow dry no real waiting for T-bar.

Everyone knows you need to wait till august for the good skiing - on melted and refrozen crud! Skiing in June and July for the quality. Just a shame maximum snow depths don't coincide with our coldest months.

Cold tonight. All ready reached -8.9c at 9.30pm. Of course, guns blazing.
Hoping for wind tomorrow to buff the Bluff.

Glorious morning, snow a bit harder than yesterday, still some wind blown if want to work for it.

    And very quite.

Yep it's still pretty cool which is keeping the snow firm, but with not too much skier traffic it's fun out there.

I'm done for the week though - long drive back home now

Another weekend at Thredbo done, had a ball.

Snow was better than last time and hopefully when I'm back in a week or so it will be better again.

Had a great time listening to Joc at the House of Ullr, played all the favourites.

My only comment is ski patrol really need to work on the ski racers coming down sundance! Yep they can ski but I've seen some pretty good skiers take an unexpected crash and the consequences would be ugly if a skier went through the crowd on the toboggan run.

Oh man! Not just death cookies. I ate it over there one year when I skied into a pot hole about two feet deep. I have no idea how it came about but with flat(ish) light it caught me out a treat. Double eject, face plant, sprained my thumb. Haven't used my pole straps since.

Get yourself some of those Leki poles with the clip in
Recovered skiers thumb victim speaking here
There's also a method of holding your poles through a strap to avoid the ST injury, but the poles are a great investment, let's you concentrate more on the important stuff!

Not a lot of space at thredbo for race training generally, but early season is worse. Plus you have the company program "Mountain Academy" now competing with TSRC, along with St Moritz ski club, all fighting for hill space, it is a bit of a recipe for an accident.

Pretty sure St Moritz don't have a dedicated race course. They seem to occasionally piggyback the others' so far this year.

Sorry but I don't want understand your post, what does a lack of space have to do with it? Do your race training on the race track, there is nothing to be gained in the last 100m before a lift, but much to lose!

Yesterday the snow conditions were very variable and I know a couple of the kids stacked flying down Sundance, luckily higher up.

None of the clubs at Thredbo have dedicated space, I guess about the only spot is Rossi race course, Its a difficult balance for mountain management.
By contrast, it seems at Perisher the mountain management are quite generous in blocking off runs e.g.: mother in law / hyper trail , all day for their race club, but then the resort is more than 4 x the size of thredbo, so it less disruptive. Agree there should be NO race training on open runs.

It's not even that, sundance is a very under utilised run (one of my favourites), with the race track above it is all but a closed track. This has nothing to do with mountain management, this is about the clubs and those running them teaching common sense and etiquette. As kids improve ski technique it is critical to teach them to assess and understand risk. Personally I think it's the older kids and instructors who need to take responsibility.

Strange analogy but I listened to an Alex Honnold interview with him discussing risk and free soloing, the risk of him falling is minimal the consequences are high.

Same thing here, the risk is low but if it did go wrong it would be horrid.

This is so true, this most important part of growing up, but also learning any adrenalin sport, its NOT how good you are, but the choices you make in the application of your ability. Sometimes you see the most adept of athletes make some really dumb choices which not only may affect them but others around them. For me this sort of behaviour totally cancels any regard I might have had for that individuals ability.
Again you are correct, ski race coaches have an absolute obligation to teach good decisions above anything else, and to lead by example. Its disappointing to hear this is not happening in this instance.

edit: Just so I'm clear, I agree with your first post, was trying to put some context around the behaviour, I think we all agree that its not clever. :)

@Nidecker, It's all good, I understood your position it was more about making sure people take responsibility. It's easy to blame the mtn.

In this instance I look at the athlete, coach, parents, club culture but also the Thredbo staff who watched it time and again and only realised the danger when I mentioned it to them. As we were chatting we watched a young dude loose balance and luckily right himself.

Her deep intake of breath said it all!

Just one thing on this though - the tobagganers aren't supposed to be on that run in the first place, right?

Maybe Thredbo could send someone over there occasionally to remind people of that

Nobody was on the run, they were all behind the roped off area, I skied down there and was chatting to my wife who had our youngest making a snow man.

Don't get me started on the Toboggan run, it's an accident waiting to happen. And to add to the mayhem a skier loosing control and plowing through the waiting punters wouldn't be great.

Did I hear someone say "stay on topic"? OK here goes:

    THREDBO REPORT
Fun day. First day out (except for a sneaky run down ST at 4pm yesterday, which wasn't fun...). Snow was pretty good top to bottom today. Supertrail was the worst. Merrits was very good early on, with a few icy patches that grew as the day went on. The powder bowl was very nice in parts but the run-out was ordinary. High Noon was surprisingly good overall, much better than ST. Antons had some lovely windblown in parts but they were all too short. I didn't go over the other side. The Basin was closed when I first went up and I didn't go back that way. Saw a few people on the Bluff, which looked ok, but nothing else over that side is skiable for most mortals.
It started snowing about 2:30, chucked it down for a little while until about 3pm - probably got 1cm out of it. Even that freshened thing up nicely, with good snow until home time. Still not a lot of snow off the main runs, but the man-made cover is very good and the quality everywhere is noice.
Hopefully the weather will be much worse tomorrow!

It has been snowing on and off for the last few hours. If only it was all 'on' and no 'off'!

Definitely whiter than it was though.

Seriously chucked it down up high for most of the day. Hard granular bullets - graupel? Windy as buggery. I spent the day lapping Anton's, which had some beeeautiful snow and which would have been even better if you could have seen where the f**k you were going. The village is starting to look like a ski town and everybody is pretty pumped.

The main runs skied well today. Pretty remarkable given the overnight rain. The upper mountain cover has improved from the windblown. Upper Bushranger is now skiable and Antons had some nice snow albeit the visibility was interesting. No lift lines. Still snowing lightly in the village now.

Looks like yesterday's fresh has been well needed... my fave (the Bluff) even looks to have filled in nicely. With some windblown and more snow this week, I may well be a happy camper next week... Even some people skiing Little Beauty on the cams just now. Bas.tards...

It s exactly what we need! Much of the snow is relatively heavy, wind packed and there is even crust and in places. Should be very good base snow. There are some nice weather d drifts up high.
