    Hey everyone,

Just dug my Dad's old skis out of the attic. They're early 80s Splitkeins. 210cm.

Obviously never going to become my main set of skis, but if I gave the bindings a clean and the skis a good wax, how do people reckon they'd go?

Worth bothering or a lost cause?

Thinking more a touring ski. Maybe muck around with some stem turns on gentle slopes.

Is that a mohair base? Will ball up, stick and be a general pain in the arse.

Or is it mica? Will not work.

    Mica. Why won't it work?

never did, at least in Australia. Far too long ago I spent an unpleasant weekend on mica hire skis.

    They will be fine.

But very likely they will delaminate heaps. Very typical for skis of this ( or any old) age. Possibly spectaculary.

Mica base was always dodgy is Aus conditions. Take skins, kickers wil do.

Should tour well if they still have their camber.

In summary straight to pool room.

I figured pool room / wall might be the case.

Still, might take them to Lake Mountain for the day and see how they go.

I'm no skier, but they'd be cool as @%#$ to play around on.

Tune 'em up and take them for a turn or two next winter. If he's still alive, tell him you did it and he'll love it or reckon you're mad but love it anyway. If he's no longer with you, do it for sure.

I'll do that. And yes, Dad's still around. Think he'll get a kick out of the skis having a last hurrah.

Do you have boots that fit you that will attach to those old bindings? The skis are very long, so Dad must have been pretty tall. They will be nice and stable for touring but a pita for turning. Try them out for sure but you would probably be better off on some modern skis, hired, for example, in Narbethong.

They'll be fine for shits and giggles, but they will ski like rubbish compared to modern skis.

I'm 178 cm. My XC skis of that vintage were 210 cm. Longer even than my 200 cm alpine gear.
