Yep pretty sensible. Though i'm not sure about the ban on walk-up bookings. Surely the other provisions provide adequate protection against under prepared types.

Dude you have NO IDEA. There have been some classics in the uni outdoors club. For canyoning:
    • "Make sure you bring thick wollen socks, as we will be wading and swimming through very cold water" -> newbie brought thick wollen socks...and no shoes. They had flip flops
    • "You will need a drybag" -> newbie brings a drybag...and no backpack, assuming they will be carrying the drybag using the clip as a handle, like a briefcase.
    • In fact people thinking they don't need a backpack and they can just carry stuff in their arms, has happened multiple times in multiple situations. E.g. the Six Foot Track "I can't fit my sleeping bag in my pack, I can just carry it right"
    • "The walk will be off track and be rough with lots of bashing" -> newbie wears short shorts. Gets mauled by thorns and branches, looks like they've been flogged

Those all sound pretty harmless :p

I once did a short muddy jungle trek in Borneo wearing socks and double pluggers. Was the last day and didnt want to get my shoes muddy but was warned about leaches. Genius!

Mmm if there's a special case though, the Overland is it, being so popular, and with people so reliant on the huts (it's a great cautionary example about relying on huts)

"One of the things most people love about bushwalking is finding some peace and quiet in a beautiful, wild place. Possibly this was not the experience most walkers had when 200 of them crammed into the Overland Track’s Waterfall Valley Hut, designed for just 24, and nearby tent sites one night."

Yep but the gear check list (and daily number limits) deals with this. But this could potentially hamper travellers that are good outdoorsy types who want to do the hike spur of the moment. That kind of spontaneity is a great thing when you are travelling.

And one from a Uni club that you might be associated with... turning up for a three day off track walk in the Wild Dog mtns with no pack, just two plastic shopping bags. Somehow this person was allowed to go on the walk, and upon disintegration of said bushwalking shopping bags ended up carrying most items in their arms for the duration. @Bloke this wasn't one of your trips was it? :) Wasn't one of mine!

When I started going out with mates we had no sleeping mats, fk me that was cold sometimes.

Left two girls our foamies once at Seamans hut, they were from QLD, had reasonable sleeping bags, but no mats. We were there for a december ski, they were amazed.

Yup, mate from uni organized a crew to walk the OT. He though his trekking boot that he had worn thru Mexico 7 years previously would do the job. Sole fell off both boots before leaving Launceston. He did manage to buy a really expense pair of Blunies from the cradle mountain resort, only problem was they were a couple of sizes to small, his feet paid the price.

I was lucky in that my dad introduced me to outdoor pursuits gradually from a young age. So I kind of vetted my friends in it. Gained me the nickname of 'camp dad' though. Still, quite a few people experienced stuff they never would have if the didnt know me.

    Dude.
It wasn't the outdoors stuff that got you labelled 'camp dad'.

I drove up to CP turning circle in May a year or two back..
Full blizz , no tracks ahead of me on the road , I get to the turning circle and found a youngish couple with their car off the road into high side drainage. Both wet. Exhausted. Spent looking.
So I offered them a lift & declined the request trying to extract their commodore sedan.
When I had them in the car I asked where they spent the night , they where in a tent out near Blue Lake !!!
    100km winds.
No , they didn't know it was coming .... you could see it from 10 days out ...it didn't budge from the charts..
I had hardly slept , safely tucked in my bed at Guthega due to the storm. It was feral.
So I dropped them down at Stillwell and couple of folk in there said they'd look after them with hot shower food and a bed.
I get to Jindy and we then find their car keys in my car.
So into NPWS , tell them the story...hand over keys.
    Wow.

Funny watching the range of people walking to Mueller Hut 1800m with snow to 1500m. Lots of people with ice axes and crampons and big packs, but also some people in Jeans and tiny backpacks. Funny with a Chinese group seeing snow for the first time. Saw a icefall / avalanche off the adj peak.

Saw someone carrying a Piolet on their rucksack on New Years day at Blue Lake. Must have been doing some track work.

I must admit there a few times on that walk where i was feeling more than a little underdone as "trampers" carrying ice axes and crampons walked by us on the way down. In particular traversing a mild slope above a very steep slope that ended up in the Mueller glacier below and finding out there was an icy surface under about 10cm of fresh snow. Much concentration kicking steps with the rubber soled hiking boots. And just the right amount of cautioning the +1 so she didn't freak out and ask for an airlift.

You can probably make the Mueller Hut without equipment, if the snow is soft or there are good footprints... But good luck getting beyond the hut to anywhere. And the icefalls off Mt Sefton are plentiful, you get accustomed to them.

Geehi toilets used to have a power point and light switch and Ubi did think of leaving a toaster and a few appliances down there for some glam... camping! An extension lead would have been the go!
