More a circumstance thing for me. Trends have little to do with ski destination choice, or we would all be in Japan ;)

So are you guys @gareth_oau @Ralph_implement @northsail doing any skiing/boarding in the next 12 months or is it a down year ?

After 4 trips to Japan we're actually heading to Canada next trip, Fernie and Red Mountain.

It had a different feel to it this trip just gone. Met a lot of lovely people for the first time and also caught up with friends from times past. Some less than anticipated. MS and DrD were extremely welcoming as always. Very generous with their time with any visitors that come across and make themselves known.

I have been around for a while. I have seen threads on Big White and never opened them. I think your version of THE place is based on number of posts in a thread rather than number of actual visitors. Flawed logic IMO.

Family circumstance means we will probably give this year a miss, but the following year will likely have to go through UK for the same family circumstance, so SP is of the radar for us for a couple of years. Not to say we won't be keeping a close eye on a place that has given us a lot of fun and some life long friends, with a view to return.

Start practising your French and german. It's a hop skip and a jump to some wonderful stuff over there. Thumbs up for what you're doing. We've been following and our thoughts have been with you and the family.

I was made redundant at work 3 weeks ago, so no plans for SP this time around, unless I can score another good paying job AND arrange annual leave.

However, I already have Thredbo booked and paid for in August

Local skiing for me this year and am really looking forward to it. My current enthusiasm may change when i am standing in long lift lines and skiing poor quality snow.
Our OS trips are every two years and SP may be a destination again.

Yep. Sean's moved to San Francisco, so California resorts for us this year.

Hoping to catch up with @northsail at Perisher. But if there are quite a few Peakers in town, a reunion should prevail.

We'll be in California every January for the next few years. But Mrs Astro loves winter road trips, so a few days, or even weeks, in Sun Peaks, probably isn't too far away.

Hope to catch up soon.

I haven't decided anything for the early 2017 period as yet.
    Immediate plans?
First .......survive skiing the whole of Perisher 2016 season.
    Second....have a couple of "required" surgeries Oct/Nov
    Third......Family Xmas.
Options thereafter.........(a)skiing Europe (b) Skiing Epic USA (c) Skiing Sun Peaks (d) getting fat and lazy in Oz.
At this stage, Skiing Sun Peaks is the winner. I loved the last visit and it would be "easy as" to go again.
Put me down as a Strong Maybe! :)

Industry won out over academia @Astro66 ? If not, a stint at Berkley, or Stanford perhaps? Pretty exciting either way.

Agree. It's just a shame we're loosing them all to the US and Europe, where high skilled engineering innovation is highly valued.

But if it gets me skiing Northern hemisphere more regularly. I guess I'll just have to suck it up. LOL

Lots of options at Tahoe. There is a loyal following there too and it's a pretty spectacular area. Yosemite in winter is magical. Still enough to keep you busy there for a day or two.

completely unexpected - boss was talking about a promotion only a few weeks earlier (lulling me into a false sense of security perhaps?)

I work in Oil and Gas (LNG) and know lots of people being made redundant. The LNG industry is likely to be quiet for another 3-4 years, so chances are I will end up in a completely different industry

How horrible to have that happen - especially out of the blue. Was there any explanation given about how you went from consideration for promotion to redundant?

Good luck in finding a new position - I'm sure that you have skills other companies would want.

From a left field perspective, doesn't Canada have a thriving Oil and Gas Industry? Could you consider doing what MS did?

The BC govt has been talking long and loud about LNG export, the premier has made it the central plank of her jobs plan, but to date there no funding commitment has been made by any major player and there are no liquification plants in construction or operation. There's lots of production facilities in northeastern BC and northern Alberta serving domestic demand. Commodity pricing has been low for some years due to excess production on the domestic market and restricted pipeline capacity for distribution further afield.
