Looking at the Shark Smart app it seems they are still concentrated around that Newcastle to Forster area.

Plenty of activity on Shark Smart.
Had a four footer swim under a bloke on SUP at Molly the other day.
Flags where packed each end , had us on our toes even more so.....
1 or 2 foot , summer Mal riders or I just not fussed with the crowds.
D16 bumping shoulders with the Groms on a 6 foot softy again .
Straight out the front of home on the old Scotsmans go - to rocks and sand combo ;)

I bet GCR would have easy 50+ dudes on it when it's 1 to 2ft during the busy summer period :D

Yea doesn't take much at the best of times to get a crew out there.
Easy access , mellow wave till it gets bigger .....
Everybody keen to cash in their water time while they are here on hols which is cool.
Most of us stay out of the way or pretty much just accept it may going to be off the scale.
Can get a wave to yourself if you have a sniff around.
We need the big numbers in town tho for town to survive, and blokes like me can keep ticking the work over as Town grows with the demand.

Thinking about a mini mal, maybe 7'6" or shorter?

I'm not a fan of mini mals, they have their place for beginners but reckon you might as well ride a proper longboard. If you want an old boys board have a look at the McCoy nuggets

Try a shorter board with more litres. You can still get good paddle power with a shorter board and have better turning ability.A good example would be a 6'x2" 21" x2 3/4" which would give about 38 litres. This would be ideal for someone in the 85 kg range.Remember foam is you're friend.

I'vehad an 8'0 for a couple of years.
    Frustrating prolly sums it up.
OK when the fitness is down and great for the Golfy in traffic :D
and on those semi - nothing days when it's cruise time.
But drives me nuts when I want to get a bit more top to bottom happening and really find it suffers with shape of the wave face completely at odds with the rail length. Keep this in mind.
Have had some srsly good times on driving down the line stuff but now it's time to move on.. or rather back to where I came from !

@nfip how was it down your way today?

2 to occasional 3ft E swell up here in Sydney with onshore ENE wind for most of the day, seemed to lighten up in the afternoon on the high.

I wasn't so lucky to get that and had the morning low with strong ENE wind combo producing very average conditions :(

    Much the same.
Lighter winds tho perhaps , not enough to really mess it up.
Nice lazy summer spillers to keep the punters happy.
Didnt bother myself , busy with semi work working and lotsa family duty.
Happy to play but bit of meh attitude while its so busy.

Day off from surfing yesterday but had a fairly early session at North Palm Beach today. Small-ish, good-ish, shallow-ish. Funny short but very intense burst of rain mid-session with the sun still shining. My wife was doing yoga in a class in the park near bend in the road and they all got drenched.

South Palm Beach early this morning - same bank as I have surfed a few times in the last week or two, more-or-less in front of 2108 Espresso. Got a couple of dozen mostly short, somewhat rip/current-affected waves, got run over by one of my friends (who rides a mal, but I make allowances), then I gave up and went home after the number of beginners and random floating summer stuff bobbing around on the inside got too much. Worth a paddle early though. FWIW the north end looked ok too, a couple of guys were out from about 6am a couple of hundred metres down from Barrenjoey, but the consensus was for south so I went south.

When I went home a bit before 8am there were more and more people turning up, and if Palm is going to get busy that early I can only guess the more accessible beaches would have been getting crazy.

I had a weekend on the road.
Two eldest went skydiving at Picton Saturday.
    Up and back.
Then return trip to Sydney yesterday.
Tempted to stay onight but counting the $ we decided to drive home.
Got caught in the gridlock known as Sydney International yesterday.
Made the mistake coing in the back thru Arncliffe.
Took an hour and half from fire Station to the airport....
Bombo looked a nice 2 or 3 feet on the way home.
Junior World champs or similiar are on there up North of the Station.

@SAsurfa got any more pics from the weekend strike mission? Looked awesome and can't believe your luck right in the middle of peak holiday time to score with only 5 guys out! Hope your car didn't get broken into

I was persuaded into an early today by a couple of my friends (and one of my L-plater twins who is now almost back on track in terms of getting through his driving hours in the year).

Rather bigger than I thought it would be - 3-4' on the sets at South Palm Beach and pretty solid - and it surfed better than it looked from the beach. My son and my friend's son went at it on their lids and I pulled into a few that I probably shouldn't have (and predictably didn't come out of) but got a couple of pretty nice waves. Strong cross-current and was sucking up pretty hard onto a shallow bank so if you ate it you ate it HARD. Good session though.

Sounds good @Ted Harper and how are the 'banks' working along the Palm stretch with the more ENE favored swell direction?

We do have something approximating banks at the moment. At least good deep channels at intervals all up the beach with incidental banks between them. Different quality and a bit flukey so depending on the tide and swell direction just about anywhere can be working ok or just offering straight-handers (but at least with a rip to paddle back out in). Least good is the middle of the beach near bend-in-the-road, both ends pretty ok and there is a LOT of sand right now at Kiddies' Corner so that has been good for the surf school and school holiday beginners in general (inflatable giant thongs and pink flamingos seem to work everywhere on the beach though at this time of year (sigh)).

I've found that over time if you receive a consistent round of favorable swell that banks can develop nicely but as you say, right tide, right swell direction, right wind, it's all so flukey with sand

My home stretch (DY-LR) is also showing a few nice sand formations along the beach and with the right combo of conditions it will be game on. I have noticed over the years that it really does prefer mid to high tides for better wave quality just as a general rule

@SAsurfa just checked the long range, next weekend / early next week might also be good for another strike mission to the same place but I'm sure you already know that :D

This morning at South Palm Beach was mega, particularly before it filled up with people. My friend and I, and her son and mine were the first in the water and made the most of it. Sets were at least 3' and some a fair bit bigger every 10 minutes or so. Few hollow ones and pretty nice steep walls and makeable sections on the others.

I ended up with 31 waves - could have been a few more but I got wrecked by a freak double-up wave standing in the shorebreak. I was waiting to paddle back out after getting one right through to the beach and letting the rest of the set come through. I was literally blown off my feet by a double overhead wall of water and over the falls holding my board backwards onto dry sand. Have grazed up my forehead fairly badly and given my ribs a big whack too. Must have been good to watch but by far the worst I have ever been worked by a shorebreak (context: I have been surfing about 46 years and mostly at Palm Beach, I can never remember being upended and pile-driven onto the beach while standing waiting to paddle out before).

My wife came down to meet us for apres-surf coffee (far too big for her to go out on her bodyboard and a bit much school holiday madness in the water to want to get mixed up with) and gave me the expected level of sympathy (sigh).

Winds back out of the north next Monday too ;)
I was hoping for my 'secret point bank' next Sunday AM but I don't think the swell will arrive in time. The arvo low tide will be out of the question with the boy :( :)

Going to have some grunt this one too, but very south.
Summer Vic points on Sat, the MP will be going bonkers on Sunday when the winds go back east.

I can report that the home stretch looked very small and weak around 11am this morning. Best option appeared to be a swim but there could be a few waves at more NE facing beaches as per Swell Net report

Local bloke/dad chomped by bull shark at Balian............
Bitten on lower arm, punched with other and released.......operated on in Bali (which is more of a concern).
Had this argument with my son just now about getting out of Indo ASAP with insurance assistance to get better treatment. He reckons no worries with operations in Bali!!!!!!!
So different now to your day dad he reckons!!!

I didn't surf this morning (or yesterday) - trying to let my badly grazed forehead and sore ribs recover a bit.

Just got an update for today though "All you missed at pb today was a 2m bronze whaler!" Apparently she got down ready to paddle out, saw nobody in the water and asked someone before going out. Shark alarm had just been turned off before she got there.
