I'd love to try a carton or two of that stuff. Might have to reschedule school holidays next year
The festival usually runs for two days..... at night there are bands playing in the large hall at Maruike/Hasuike.
Ahhhh so that's why you stayed up that end of town recently, scoping out the hotels, transport options etc.
Is it true you live in/around Yokohama generally, or have i got that wrong??
I often go on Gaijin weekend bus trips, so they always stay at Maruike. So I know Shiga Kogen well, no need to scope that stuff!!!
I've been at the festival the last 3 years.
I live in Yokohama!!
would be fun.
Well, for starters, the bus trips are always fun!!!!
(not like the boring Japanese bus trips!!!! )
I'll see what I am upto.
I read, that you've been there the last three years, but that doesn't mean you remember much about them
We currently have an exchange student with us from Konan ward, staying 2 weeks total.
And this year, I'll probably end up with 9 days at Shiga Kogen (8 of those down at Maruike)
Konan Ward is is about 12km from my place.
"Down" at Mariuke sounds ominous, sounds like Monkey Beer fest has started some time ago, with the official dates a few weeks away yet.
Maruike is right next to Sun Valley, which is the lowest point at Shiga Kogen. I always ski "up" to the rest of Shiga kogen in the morning, and back "down" to Maruike in the afternoon.
Ah that explains it. I only got as far as Hasuike before the lack of daylight told me it was beer o'clock. I knew it was low, but hadn't seen it for myself.
We skied to Maruike from Ichinose to go to Post Office.Had lunch at Sun Valley.Would love to go to the
beerfest.Should I let divorce get in the road of a good relationship?
I regularly go from Maruike to Okushiga & back.(or duck down to Sun Valley then go the whole distance)
We did okushiga to hasuike and back one day, it was a doddle, lunch at Giant.
If I'm by myself, it takes me about 25 min from Maruike.
If it's a nice day, it takes me a bit longer than that due to some strategic scenic stops.
NHK was covering Yamanouchi-machi this morning. Yamanouchi-mach is where there are Shiga Kogen, snow monkey park, Shibu Onsen, etc. NHK was reporting that more and more Australian and the other foreign people have been coming to Yamanouchi-machi recently. NHK was interviewing some Australian people at Crumpet Cafe (It's the cafe at the top of Mt.Yokote). It looked like more than 70% of the people in Crumpet Cafe were Westerners, not Japanese. I hope the increasing number of foreign skiers to Shiga Kogen will result in new lifts, more skiable area(especially better access to backcountry & off piste skiing), more restaurants, etc.
I was there that day, the reporter was a girl in a blue down jacket from memory. She gestured at me to be interviewed as I was on the first chair up but I did the japanese thing and pretended not to see her lol.
I was thinking yeah, cute girl, interview dude with splitboard and bc gear, story gets twisted around into gaijin rope duckers getting rescued by helicopter and theres me, talking words nobody can understand on the tv whilst becoming the poster boy for naughty gaijin snowboarders.
I swear I didn't see her
I would have laughed to see this.
Giant Bob vs Petite puffy girl.
would have looked a bit ridiculous .
Fwiw Yokoteyama are very strict in regards to riding out of bounds.
No Prob, ladder/steps for puffy girl,
Lunch and camera gear in backpack of BG, splitboard = new trend.
BG still naughty tho...........
Coming down nicely in Okushiga at present. Snowed lightly all day since 10:00am getting heavier from 2:00pm. Nice freshies this afternoon. No friends in the morning!
40-50 cm storm in 24 hours. Probably had my best ski day in 2 years, pow pow up to my bollocks! Retired at 3:30pm as I had nothing left-very cold -13 although felt colder. Unfortunately, locked in to Okushiga as the gondola was not up to it in the cross wind and that left transit options limited. If this is the worst day of my life, hello!
Hope to cruise 2morrow, Terrakoya, Higa etc
Alan makes a mean Irish Coffee, Stairway to Heaven 2morrow!
Hey Shiga crew. I heard that they have canned the ski only area at the back end of Shiga now and anyone can use it. Is this correct?
This season, both Okushigakogen at one end, and Kumanoyu other, allow snowboarding.
I.e. No restrictions anywhere
Thanks Sandy. Time for another roadie
Yep can confirm, first season knuckle draggers can take the top off the Okushiga lines. Smart business decision though!
I've been to BOTH Okushigakogen and Kumanoyu, and I've seen snowboarders at both places.
Hi all... packing for Japan as we speak. We will only have 2 days skiing at Shiga Kogen (staying at Prince West). Due to the short time period we are hiring ski gear (bringing clothing). My question is do I pack our helmets or are they part of the ski equip hire nowadays?? They are light but take up a bucket load of room in the luggage. We will be taking it very easy as we will be skiing with our 6 yr old. So ditch the helmets or not?? Thanks in advance.
Interestingly enough at the Okushiga Kogen hotel, helmets were complimentary .
My memory of the Prince was they had kids helmets but only a handful of adult sizes.
I always take my own.
If you go to Shiga Kogen from Iiyama station by taxi and stay at a hotel / Ryokan there, Yamanouchi-machi will pay you 2,500 Yen. If you rent a car around Iiyama station, drive to Shiga Kogen and stay at a hotel / Ryokan there, Yamanouchi-machi will pay you 5,000Yen. Yamanouchi-machi is where there are Shiga Kogen, Snow monkey park, Shibu Onsen, etc. Yamanoichi-machi wants more people to visit Yamanouchi-machi.
Will be in Shiga around April 12th for 5 days. First time in Japan and first time snowboarding.
Originally we planned to come earlier and stay in Nozawa but I couldn't make it in early March so we changed it to April and now plan to stay in Shiga. I hope that was the right choice?
Anyway just looking for ideas on areas to stay. We are hiring a car in Nagano so it will be easier to hire snowboarding gear, see the snow monkeys and do the Alpine route etc.
Does having a car change where I should be looking for accommodation or should I still look for ski in/out in Ichinose??
The Alpine route can not be done by car. The route could still be closed?
Yes I know. we plan to drive to Ogizawa Station and leave the car there while we do this route(opens on April 16) :
Some of Shiga Kogen will be closed by then.
The area around Ichinose and to the south will be accessible, including Ichinose Quad, Tannenomori & Takamagahara(Sat/Sun).
Ichinose Diamond quad & Terkoya will only be operating weekends.
Yakebitaiyama area is not released yet (area around Prince hotel) (access to Yakebitaiyama from Ichinose is via Ichinose Diamond quad, or bus or walk) and much of Okushigakogen will be operating.
Yokoteyama/Shibutoge & Kumanoyu will run
I would stay at Ichinose or at the Prince Hotel at Yakebitaiyama, depending on the Yakebitaiyama lifts.
See details here:
Thanks Sandy. Very helpful!
Sandy....what do you think about staying in Okushiga Kogen since they are allowing snowboarders this year and it looks like it is mostly all open?
I'd wait until the situation at Yakebitaiyama is clarified. Yakebitaiyama is the largest single area, and is between Okushigakogen and Ichinose. If the bus is not running & Yakebitaiyama is not running, you might find yourself stuck down that end.
We will have a hire car though.
Found a good Gmap that might be helpful to others that haven't been to Shiga : https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zC4sNrRIvn8k.kXK0Tfe5Hz9o&hl=en_US
Ok, then Okushiga should be fine.
Checkout snowjapan.com Shiga Kogen page for fairly accurate details of each area's intended lift operating cut off dates. Although published they may change/shut earlier depending on cover or as I experienced in early March with the Okushiga Kogen Gondola, weather/patronage.
Waiting in Kyoto for the train to Kanazawa then onto Nagano and up to yudanaka. After a visit to the snow monkeys we should be at shiga kogen this afternoon. Reallly hoping it will be good as we only have 2 days skiing before returning to tokyo. Not after powder just snow conditions better than thredbo. Happy with some nice groomers.
