BACK COUNTRY SKIING & AVALANCHE AWARENESS COURSE
Backcountry skiing skills open up the terrain beyond the resort from side country chutes to the peaks of high mountain touring.

It all begins with the willingness to hike / climb / skin to earn higher quality turns. There are a range of skills, including skiing varying snow conditions, terrain and snow analysis, route selection and trip planning that enable you to maximise your time & turns in the backcountry.

The most important knowledge to develop for backcountry skiing is an awareness of snow conditions, the factors that contribute to avalanches and strategies for travelling with relative safety in avalanche terrain.

This 5 day course, based at Wanaka, will use a series of day trips, complemented by necessary theory sessions, to introduce, practice, and coach the key skills of backcountry skiing and the weather, snow and terrain analysis that underpins safe and enjoyable skiing in avalanche terrain.
