Thought I should start this seeing as Myoko is up and running .........

I know it is a long way out , but from my observations Nozawa Onsen still seems to be the flavour of the month . After talking with other operators in town school holiday dates and particularly around the Fire Festival (15th January) are in big demand .

Yes, will be getting even more busier next season judging by some of the enquiries I'm getting too. Everyone wants self contained accommodation in a traditional Japanese village too.

Fire Festival on the 15th BTW.

Before Donza comes in posts pictures of food and booze LOL I'll pop in some useful links taken from last year's thread.

TBC is making murmurings about the Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival which I think is the last week of January, murmurings about "we could go skiing as well"

The answer is "I really don't want to disturb you whilst you're at the festival. How about I wait for you in Nozawa?"

If your better half is into quilting think about a stay at @skichanger 's place in Myoko.

Is there a quilting half there ? TBC is not a big skier but loves meeting new people and dinking about. Quilts and sewing have become her time filler now the kids have buggered off.

Would love to have someone to go to the quilt show with. In a past life (well only past in my opinion) I was a mad quilter. Actually had forgotten the I had given MG's youngest a quilt, which is how he knows I am a quilter. Grand plan, one day, is to have my quilts on all the beds in Chalet Myoko... May take a few years to achieve. Anyway can show TBC lots of good spots for fabrics etc. Went to a Kimono making place recently. Was an amazing building.

Very interesting. TBC is just starting out but has done an amazing job in her first quilt which she is taking to her mum in Edmonton in June. She also quilted up some squares with Samoyed fur inlay that came up a treat.

Samoyed fur sounds interesting. I am a bit of a fibre junky. It is a bit addictive.

Hello, are you still wondering about Lodge Yukiyama? The owner of this accommodation is very nice and kind man. Facility is just the average of Minshuku (Japanese pension). Meal is for and against, to be honest. But I know you would like to eat out, wouldn't you?! It is one of recommended accommodation, isn't it ;)

    Hello,
    First post so be gentle.
I see the Nozawa Onsen resort posted a pick of some lift work being undertaken, does anyone know if there is replacement/upgrades being undertaken or just general servicing works?
    Thanks

Yes, being replaced. Built in 1983 so getting a bit ancient.
That said they'd be an awful lot if lifts in Japan still operating that would be older than that.

Doesn't address the lack of continuous fall line terrain?

Hello, this is not only replacement of Hikage 2nd pair but Hikage slope is upgrading now and Sports park (this is temporary name) will be opened in next spring. There is zip-line, artificial turf ski slope, kids slides, multi perpose space and so on in the parl. This park offers summer activity the visitors. At the moment, you can enjoy only onsen in summer season. After open the park, you can enjoy some activity in Hikage as well. Moreover, the plan is not only opening this park but also replacement of Nagasaka gondola and Hikage gondola. (These are quite old, almost the time to replace.) And some chair lift will be removed and maybe replaced. I remember Challenge pair lift and some will be removed... This is just a plan now, it might be changed but Nozawa resort will be renewed in near future.

I thought that the Challenge lift was the best on the hill but only seemed to be open on weekends, mores the pity.

Quite frankly, I don't see how this would be possible in the near future. The Nagasaka Gondola is perfectly workable, and the investment of money in replacing it, is something that can be scarcely possible. It's better than most gondolas around central Japan.

The talk is they are going to straighten the Nagasaka gondola so there is no dog leg at mid station , and whether that means getting rid of mid station I don't know , but it will run in a straight line . With Hikage gondola it also will be upgraded / re aligned , and yes they have mooted that Challenge pair will go , not soon I hope .

Interesting that they are laying an artificial turf slope. I know an instructor that teaches out of winter at several resorts that have artificial turf. And Kagura built a very long artificial turf slope last season.

@Nozawaman you will have to open year round.

Thank you, that's very nice of you to say about Nagasaka gondola.
The replacing plan of Nagasaka gondola has been decided. It will carry out within 10 years.

looking at a week in Nozawa just after the fire festival but before we commit, i'd like to get the 'scoop'.
it was recommended because it isn't a 'bali of the north' like niseko or whistler
any recommendations for accommodation that aren't to far from anything (village doesn't look to big on the maps but been caught before)?
any real difference between ski or board suitability? i'm taking a mate to Japan for the first time and he is an intermediate boarder so don't want to end up on the flat.
any info on 'mountain hosts' to speed up familiarisation with the resort? just don't want to waste half the time there figuring out how to 'link' the resort.
    cheers.

Accom: check out Nozawa Tourist Information http://nozawakanko.jp/english/
    or local travel agent http://ixsmtravel.com/
The village is fairly compact. Pretty easy to walk everywhere. There is a free village shuttle bus as well that runs every 20 mins or so. Just don't locate furthest down the hill away from the Nagasaka or Hikage base. Near Karasawa is ok too.

If the visability is good you should get familiar with the basic layout in a day or so. If not, may take 2 or 3 days.
Basically 3 spines (ridges) and 3 valleys in between; Hikage (left) Nagasaka (centre) Skyline/Karasawa (right) . The spine furthest to lookers left, above Hikage gondola, is long and flat through the middle - Uenotaira area.
There are a few other flat spots, but generally around the gondola stations, just a short walk, and your unstrapped anyway.

That's a little older, but it's the old duplex double chairs being dismantled. (on the left side)
Looks like they are installing a high speed quad more towards the middle of the run.
