I know this titel is not everybody's taste. ;)
Kind of family visit, and we are not young anymore.

However we will stay in Annupuri from 8th - 22nd February with some daytrips to other places and may be overnight stay away from Niseko.

Asarigawa Onsen might be nice? And of course Rusutsu and Kiroro. Andybody can recommend anywhere else along the cost - if there is a nice local rotenburo with see view that would top it up. :fishing:

If it wasn't for the prices and the people.... and a slight lack of culture.

Anyway. I heard there's an onsen right on the shore somewhere near Otaru. Don't know the name though

Kokusai is worth a trip but not on a weekend. Head around the back of the gondola station and try the south facing slopes. Traverse out along the creek

I'm staying some nights in Jozankei, so hoping to try Asari for a day next year

Asarigawa is cool for a day, you get an onsen ticket with your lift pass but the onsen is down the road toward Otaru at a very nice hotel.
They have an inside and outside pool.

Sad you feel the need to apoligise. Niseko does not suit all but it suits some. It ticks boxes other places don't.

    Totally agree.
It suits a lot of people.
    Me included.

I'm disappointed that the bagging here leads people to apologise or feel ashamed by visiting a great ski resort.

    Enjoy your trip Hyst.
Rusutsu is great for a day trip

I felt there has been a lot of Niseko bashing on there - so I better start Niseko 2017. Stay in a small Japanese pension - half board, when we stay local - and Annupuri has some nice rotenburo possibility.

Thank you for all your advices.

Snowfestival before Niseko and after that family near Tokyo.

Finnair has great some offers all the way to Chitose and return from Narita

Is the Otaru Onsen problem still there? Found this rather old information - I have never
(since 1981) come across such problem:
    http://www.debito.org/photosubstantiation.html

However I do not really know about having bath with a bunch of russian sailors???:whistle:

I had a look at Jozankei Onsen as well, but I am not to fond of these large Onsen Hotels - looking for smaller places to stay.

I think you can't really complain about Niseko terrain. Pretty fun I think.
What is not fun is dodging people and watching acres of fresh pow destroyed in less than 1 hour. I'm talking about inbounds. I guess people in the know will always find something they like.

    Yep. We love niseko too.
The ease of it makes it easy to bring first timers over with us.
The ski in ski out means i can go off on my own and the wife can go back to the accomodation/town / do whatever she wants.

And the snows amazing. People say its so crowded blah blah blah. A crowded day in niseko still beats the quietest day of the season on good snow in australia.

Absolutely. And even if it does get tracked out quickly, it gets filled in again EVERY FRIGGING NIGHT. If that happened 3 days in a row in Aus we'd be talking about it for decades to come.

    Agreed.
It may get tracked out quickly, but i still tend to find fresh 3 days after no snowfall there ? there is fresh anywhere you want you just have to do 5 minutes of hiking that no one else wants to

    That is quite a start:D!
Hope at least ski clothes will turn up before the season begins.:nerd:

Have they been helpful regarding the lost baggage?

Qantas into Switzerland - super helpful, toiletry kit provided and luggage delivered to destination the next morning.

Qantas domestic into Canberra - helpful, toiletry kit provided and bag located overnight for collection from airport.

British Airways into Heathrow T5 - freaking nightmare. Zero assistance. Cranky that we kept calling each day for an update. 3 days to locate 5/6 bags. 6th bag with all the valuables never turned up. Never so muchas an apology let alone a toothbrush...

Yes, so I just booked Finnair for mrs. Hyst and me today.

I almost hope our baggage get delayed on flight and delivered directly to Niseko while we stay in Sapporo for the snowfestival - handbaggage will do there for 3 days.

We had a great time in Niseko in mid Jan 2012. Had next to no crowds, never had to wait for gondolas or lifts, had onsens to ourselves. The problem is I am scared to go back, as it appears this is a rarity. It may have had something to do with the fact that this was the first season after the Fukushima disaster, and everyone was freaking out about radiation.
I did Hakuba a couple of years later in March, and didn't get the greatest conditions, but it was still very good in comparison to anywhere else in the world.
I am thinking of heading to Myoko next, potentially this coming Feb. Seems a little quieter, while offering plenty.

o_O Just took a 4 month long summer booking on my place!
It's a beautiful place to be in summer, obviously cheaper to be there than mid Winter. It's got me thinking about another summer trip now - biking, rafting, hiking...

Niseko is great - been there on all 3 of my trips to Japan!

Only reason I go elsewhere is my need for exploring other places!

Fingers cross on the luggage Hyst! But i agree with you sometimes it handy!

And you can pick up a new outfit at least - courtesy of Travel insurance!

Good stuff. Out of interest is it generally empty during summer or how do you go with bookings?

@travelislife, I know that some summer bookings are the norm, but I was surprised by a long term one.

Might not be a holiday maker though, lot of construction goes on during summer, those workers need to live somewhere, and if it were me heading there for months Id want to take my family!

We have had the apartment as owner use only up until this year but decided to miss a year and rent it out, 'bout time it paid for itself instead of being a money pit ;)

I was watching a Japanese tv show "Why did you come to Japan?". TV crew randomly talk to foreigners at airports and ask them "Why did you come to Japan?". This Australian guy bought a land in Niseko and he's been making a container hotel from scratch all by himself, cool:cool:. Does anyone here know him:p?(Watch from 1:21:50)

We had a great family trip to Niseko in ?2013.
Great snow (it never stopped), was still cheap compared to Oz, and we were able to buy chicken nuggets for the kids!
    Everyone was a winner :)

Funny program following somebody around travelling in Japan. The program is on the japanese TV in Europe as well. Foreigners behaviour is still interesting to Japanese (and of course funny).

We have to go back from Niseko to stay 3 weeks near Tokyo. Has anybody tried the new shin from Hakodate? Is is worth taking for the view?
Only 4 hours from Shin Hakodate-Hokuto to Tokyko by Shin, but it takes the same time from Niseko st. to Shin Hakodate-Hokuto.
Price might be a bit more expensive than bus and plane.
Anybody know whether the JR-Hokkaido tracks are ok again after floods?

A new 69 unit development (ski in ski out) is going up half way up the family run (opposite Chalet Ivy on the Main Street if you're trying to work out where). The Maples.

    Thats a lot of accomodation!
I'm certainly not anti development. Niseko is well past limiting redevelopment.

But the 2017 upgrade of the family lift can not come soon enough. It's already a massive bottleneck. AYA at the base of the family run opens in just over a month - 6 floors of accomodation - the following year this new one! In addition to everything else going up in the village of course.

Upgrading the fixed pair to a detached triple or quad is not likely to cut it...
Remains to be seen, but a decent investment in getting people up and away from the base just makes sense now.

I avoid that family lift at all costs. At 9am there can be a 45minute lineup!
Last year they announced the upgrade of it to be ready for 2017/2018. A high speed quad I think. I hope it actually happens.

    Yep.
I've heard quad OR triple
It's worth avoiding first up for sure.

    It was needed years ago.
But with the increase in accomodation DIRECTLY on the run, I think it'll be obsolete and need more capacity before it's built.

I wish they'd do an access lift to get the bulk of people up and out of there, and have a separate lift that laps the family run for the beginners.

May Be Niseko should (if possible) think bigger and connect to Weiss and Iwanai - Would almost be Alpes like. But things don't move that fast over there!

Weiss is super flat, boring, and its like two valleys away. So it'd take two more lifts and be real expensive to connect, for only beginner terrain.
There's cat skiing there the last couple of years. Imagine paying $$$ for a day of beginner runs in deep pow. <sarcasm>Wooohoo!</sarcasm>
Actually ... i suppose such conditions are probably super cool for people learning to ski/board powder for the first time ... I change my sarcasm.

Moiwa is so close to Annipuri that I've asked myself several times why they arent connected. but I've heard at least two directly conflicting stories as to why tho.
A: Moiwa want to join, but Niseko United don't want them for some reason.
and B: Niseko United wants them to join up, but Moiwa want to stay separate for some reason.
I love that Moiwa is separate and so close to home and its nice and cheap for a day of guaranteed powder. however these days even they get a queues in the morning, and its getting chopped up pretty damn fast.
but in the end I think that I would like them to join up still. while most tourists' legs dont last at Moiwa until midday (and sometimes just two runs!), for me when im mid-season fit, lapping one lift repeatedly all day gets real boring and I want to move on anyway.

Looking at it from a strictly commercial perspective, adding Niseko Weiss mightn't be a bad idea. One of the supposed shortcomings of Grand Hirafu is the lack of an ideal and dedicated beginners area although the bottom of Hana is available. I've not skied Weiss but it might suit. I know, I know, there are too many people going to Niseko already but that isn't going to stop the corporate guys thinking up new ways to keep growing. Learn to skiers is a whole new market. "Niseko Weiss the deepest beginner's powder in the world." There, I've even come up with a slogan.

Hi guys got a quick question. I'm going to Niseko in feb with two other mates for two weeks. I have been looking at accomodation and it's all pretty pricy. Any suggestions of reasonably priced places, would be great!

Yes probably Harifu and we are looking to stay in dorms or an apartment. As long as there are places to go out for dinner/drinks and it isn't to far away from the lifts.

hi all, can anyone suggest an idea?
when my ski holiday ends my flight is early morning- 09.20am. Getting to the airport on the morning is too early for the ski buses so...
take a private taxi early morning?? how much is a taxi to the airport?
or take a trip to the city and stay the night before the flight?
    cheers everyone :)

not sure a taxi would take you so far, but there are some private shuttle services that do the trip. skybus comes to mind.
when i've had to do this I stayed the night in chitose and shuttle/train to the airport in the morning instead. but if you have a group of 4 or more it may be economical to do either method.
a 3 hour taxi ride through potential traffic and snow issues and getting to the airport early enough with risk of missing all of my connected flights is probably pretty stressful tho.
