Well, with the pittance we pay to ski here, execs need the money from somewhere to fund their luxury European and USA family holidays, as well as providing free mountain accommodation, entertainment and other luxury perks for their frien. . . wait, what?!

Wilsons Prom was full of them over Easter. THE I haven't seen European wasps around for years. My 3yr old had never seen them before

Pretty standard if you live in places like the Dandenongs too. We used to get a lot of them and I reckon I would kill 100 a day easily working on the trout farm either by swatting them with my hands or using my hat. On sundown you'd go attack the nests, it's good fun.

My BIL is going up this weekend for the final MTB - don't know how long this snow is going to hang around for but assuming he still goes I've asked him to leave power on for the Village cam when he leaves.

If he pulls the pin I think @mx_boarder is going as well so maybe he can set it up.

Caught up with a patroller yesterday, apparently the snow machine is exceeding expectations, they have a 300m pipe attached to it and the snow is flowing nicely so they can spread it out right down low on Bourke St.

Sure, it's not ideal. Ideal would be 2' of fresh pow on a decent base, every couple of days. (You need to go to Tahoe for that :D )

But that's not going to happen at Buller. So when it comes to a July when there's nothing but grass to ski on, as happens now, I still think people will prefer to ski on slurpees than grass.

And when there's adequate to ski on, hopefully, Buller could install the machine in an area where sight-seers' health and safety isn't being compromised by those on skis and boards.

My concern is how much power the machine uses - do I even want to know?! - and how much it's ultimately contributing to the very problem that's causing our meagre snowfalls now.

I understand the reasons behind it, and it's new, and they want to show it off etc, but at the end of the day the only thing anyone gives a shit about is snow on the ground. Or in this case, ice. Anything else is just marketing fluff. It looks like this freezer will be able to chug out snow when other snowmakers cant, and that in itself should be good enough marketing. You dont need to go on and on on social media, you need a pic that shows snow when the other resorts have none, and you're done. Buller 'should' have that this year, at least at the beginning and ends of the season.

In terms of power, I wonder how hard this can go with the town full of people and the traditional snowmaking equipment also going. Perhaps it's going to have to be used as a pre-season toy only.

They positioned it a) to accommodate the new BB1 which should go in this summer, apparently it will be slightly realigned and b) so snow could be pumped on to shakey and skyline/standard - bourke st has the best traditional snowmaking on the hill so once the machine has done it's job the guns should take over and it's position means that there is enough fall for the snow to flow down on either side.

They should get a cat-mounted version of it, I can think of a few good places it would be useful IE bottom of Howqua/Grimus/Cow Camp, the bend on Standard to name a few.

The only problem with that is, snow is heavy. Heavier on a truck driving through a muddy, hill, sometimes frozen, field. If you dont have to double handle it that's always going to work out better.

An industrial flake ice machine ( which this thing is) uses about 5.5kw per ton. I think i saw somewhere that this thing can produce 100 ton per 24hrs. So about 550 kw per 24hrs not including how they pump/blow the snow.

It produces around 200 Cubic Metres every 24 hours and the unit is a Snowfactory 220 (220KW) More information at technoalpin.com

At only $5 a trip, the village taxis are fabulous value. I'm sure nobody would complain about a small price rise to cover costs - say up to $5.25 or so.

A pretty crap idea adding an access gate at Mirimbah.

Stakeholder Notification Service - Car Parking Initiatives

In response to increasing pressure on resort car parking facilities over recent years, a number of initiatives will be in place for the 2017 snow season in order to better accommodate changing visitation patterns, minimise pedestrian and vehicle interaction and improve connections between public and private transport.

    These initiatives include:

      • The creation of additional overnight car parking facilities along Corn Hill Road to accommodate day vehicles in the CSIR car park
      • Improving and better maintaining pedestrian links between car parks and bus services
      • Changes to the car parking facilities at Mirimbah including resurfacing, re-fencing and the installation of access gates to ensure appropriate, adequate and secured parking for those visitors utilising transport services. A nominal fee per vehicle per day will be applicable for this facility ($8 per day or $48 per week)

Got to fund the CEO's payout somehow don't they?

We would always tell friends to park there and catch the bus up or I'd drive down and pick them up. A bummer it's no longer free but if they are going to resurface and make it secure, it's probably worth $8 a night

I actually don't mind this. If you use the user pay system then its fair. The car parkhas to be maintained and that costs money.

What i do have an issue with is the free bus service from the car parks.

People should be charged a fee to use this.

Also RMB cost base is way to high for the services they off. They should be easily be able to take 15% to 20% by looking at the way services are provided.

I thought Mirimbah was part of Mansfield Shire, where does the boundary of the resort end ?

Is this serious or tongue in cheek comment? Name a resort outside of Australia where you have to pay to drive in to it for starters?

It's bloody publicly owned land! It's the minimum they can do is provide access for the $45 a day!

Just thinking about this more and getting more angry - the Mirimbah car park was a big way that I kept my skiing costs down when I was in uni. I would park there and either catch the bus up or link up with friends driving through.

This is just making life harder for people trying to keep their costs down.

It doesn't affect me now as I have a 4WD with a permit but for me 20 years ago this would have totally sucked.

That would put them within the Shire limits in which case the Mansfield Shire could put no parking signs up and ticket them if that happens.
Why I asked about the resort boundary, on the map i looked at its not clear.
Mirimbah appears to be part of the Tolmie Ward of the Shire so assuming the parking in question is right next to the entry gate, otherwise the resort would have no power to charge for parking farther out if its part of the Shire which Mirimbah is.

Either way it's counter intuitive to reducing traffic on the mountain that costs them in road maintenance and traffic control.
By having free parking at the bottom it encourages less to drive up and more to take the bus or share ride in other cars which happens, people meet the the base in separate cars and all go up in one car.
This encourages people to drive their car up.

I park there anytime HH isnt running and get the bus up, cost of the bus V cost of car entry, but add $8 to the bus fare for parking there and I suspect driving up as a single car occupant wins.

While in the scheme of a day's skiing $8 for parking is a very small component, it does piss people off. The AUS ski industry does not need to do much to piss the average punter off, they already do a pretty good job of it. It's this kind of thing that makes you go hmm you know what stuff these guys im going to another resort, or dropping a day or 2 off your yearly trips. It may not seem like much on the surface, but I know for me when I take into account everything associated with a day trip to the snow, i'm looking at $200 for it. That $200 gets me 5 days of lift tickets in Japan, or 2 night accom inc. food. That's how I view skiing in AUS these days.

Yep, but its another $8 on top of ridiculous taxi from carpark, over priced lift tickets and every other way to gauge money.
So much bigger bang for buck elsewhere.
