9th April. It's snowing heavily at the moment at Lake Mountain. Entry to the mountain at this time of year is free. So take advantage of the school holidays. Hire all your gear at Mystic Mountains Ski Hire in Narbethong (on the left side of the highway) - probably the only ski hire that will be open. Edit: At this stage, I don't think the snow will last beyond Monday.

It appears the snow hasn't lasted the night. :( Rain, combined with an inconsiderate bastard driving all over it in his 4WD has destroyed the snow at least on the toboggan run. There maybe good snow though, up on the higher ski trails (which can be accessed by snowplayers at this time of year.

I put out no snow related advertising on the street and pulled it on this thread. A couple enquired but I suggested they didn't bother going. But I had good custom from locals needing winter clothing :)

How come they haven't started making snow with their refrigeration snow-maker?

If they make it now, it will probably melt on the ground or be washed away with heavy rain. I'm sure there will be plenty at least on the main toboggan run for opening weekend (10th to 12th June) which is still a month away.

Wow! What is that on the horizon? Is it a mirage?

On the horizon? Burnt snow gums from 2009. Immediately below the horizon? Workshop/shed etc roof. Below that? Pile of man-made snow.

Man with big stick talked about "high temperature snow" being stockpiled at Buller and LM.
Lots of electricity needed for that?

Back of envelope calculation, but I estimate that to get 1kg of water from +15ºC to -10ºC, you need to pump about 500 kJ of heat out of it.
(15 K * specific heat capacity of water + specific latent heat of fusion of water + 10 K * specific heat capacity of ice)
    15 K * 4181 J/(kg K) + 334000 J/kg + 10 K * 2050 J/(kg K) = 417215 J/kg
tack on some other needs like fans to blow air around or whatever, round it to 500 kJ/kg.

Assuming the refrigeration system has a coefficient of performance of 3,
    500/3 = 166.67 kJ (electricity)/kg ice
    166.67 kJ = 0.046 kWh electricty.
that means that you could make approximately 20 kg of ice per kWh electricity input. Does that sound right? Doesn't actually seem like that much electricity.

It's looking pretty good today :D Lots of fresh snow. And free resort entry.
Get all the stuff you need in Narbethong on your way there.

No idea if your calculations are correct, however it looks impressive. 22c/Kwh/20kg = $50/T? that sounds pretty cheap to me.. much cheaper than buying bags of ice from the servo..

I'm sure it's not so cheap to make! I'm sure the mountain can confirm.
Bear in mind also, that Lake Mountain is not on the electricity grid and has to generate all it's own power from a diesel generator. That means it's nowhere near as cheap as 22c/Kwh.

It is around 300kw so I have been told by another source. A 350kw genterator runs around 70 litres per hour at full load. Times that by around $1.20 cpl. Around $84 an hour.

Looked at the cams this morning and just decided to go. Partly motivated, I suppose, by Edgecrusher's report yesterday and also strider's bold plan. But Stirling is too far for a day trip and I'm hoping bb might be on after tomorrow. LM is less than 2 hrs from me so up I went. The drive from the gate was not promising but soon the white stuff appeared. I went for a short hike from the car park to check conditions- full cover from the restaurant and no ski tracks. What? Could not believe that no-one else had gone for a ski. Not Dr Lachlan, not Robin the cartographer, nor the skitec who virtually lives there, none of Teckel's regulars. Perhaps the lack of grooming put people off. Anyway 5cm down low, 10 cm at the gauge at Echo Flat trail head and the snow got better out around the Camp, dry and light but hard work on skinny skates on ungroomed trails. Came back around the snow gum trail for fun. Always good to ski in May. More to come soon, hopefully.

    Good to hear! :)
I phoned the resort this morning and asked about the snow. 3" the said, but too wet to ski or toboggan. They said it was only good for sight-seeing. So, very pleased to hear that it was good quality snow :)

But I do wish they'd update their cams. 2 of them are showing no snow at all: ski school area and ski exit trail.

    Lake Mountain website down. :(
Edit: I phoned. Apparently the site was hacked yesterday, so they've pulled it and hope to get it back up today.

That explains why fixing the cams is not a priority.
