Merritts Cam - Live Blog.
Pretty pretty pretty good.
This cam is a great indication of the "top half" of thredbo
I will add this part of the mountain is one of my favourites when the sun is out and in the afternoon sun outside at lunch.
The restaurant there recently added some greatly needed outdoor seating and the views are sensational. The food has for years been the best on mountain. It has been said that ownership recently changed and I am not sure if this has changed the quality of the experience itself. But be warned, finding a table at lunch on a busy day is tough,
At the unload point for the old Merritt's double and the cruiser quad, this area was originally where beginners learnt to ski before that was moved to Friday flat. The terrain is quite varied, from mellow runs, to secret little gladed spots to the legendary powder bowl and boundary rider- you get the full variety up on this side of the mountain. On the cruiser you also have great views of Stanley's bowl, an out of resort area favoured by the adventurous - this is definitely not an area for the average skier.
I have fond memories of learning to ski at meritts and this area is very special.
Groomer doing its thang...
I have some wet paint if you need some excitement.
Try it in the morning, wet one.
Updated on ski
I'm finding the FF live feed more interesting. Plenty of stumbling and falling over to be had.
As feedback @Richard
The live cams show up on my iPhone as 'restricted mode' and can't be seen if you are locked down (as my work phone is....)
So they don't play.
Well stop dreaming on your work phone at work and do some work on your work phone you idle loiterer you!
Does the same thing happen if you view via the Thredbo website on your phone?
They aren't live tonight, will check it out tomoz
Also, any of the youtube reports
Both those two work just dandy Richard.
Not convinced I can find the live cams on the Thredbo mobile site. Will keep looking.
The first two cams are YouTube stream
actually, the streaming cams are not on mobile on the Thredbo site - they hide the streaming cams on mobile devices
Either way, your work restrictions are causing me to rethink how I display the streaming cams on here.
I now know what scenario needs the original still images.
I saw the snow maker hold out his hand to catch the snow a few minutes ago..
suspect secret technical business going on
OK makes sense
Thanks for looking into it.
@Richard - Merrits not working on my phone, but Friday Flat does.
Just checked mine... working but had to activate hitting bottom left play then you tube came up
Edit joints empty
Yeah my issues seem to stem from the fact my work phone is permenantly in 'restricted' mode
The live cams are overlayed with the still image first. And require click to activate.
This does two things. It keeps the page load super fast and, as we have discovered, it ensures that folks like climberman, who have YouTube blocked on corporate networks, still get the regular snowcam image.
A *lot* of corporate networks have youtube blocked. They need an alternative. I think it works pretty well. It also allows those who don't care for the streaming image* to not waste bandwidth on mobile phones.
* after the novelty wears off, the live streams are not that much more interesting than a 'still life' scene. Though I do think Thredbo have chosen really great locations for streaming cams.
The game changer enabler here is YouTube providing a rock solid and totally free platform to stream off.
Nine years ago Mountainwatch installed ten or twelve streaming cams across the mountains. All of them got pulled after a few years and deployed elsewhere in the Coastalwatch network because the cost of running the bandwidth year round was seriously uneconomic.
I would not be surprised if we see all the five majors with one or two streaming cams by this time next season.
Buller has everything in place on all their cams to do this except the ability to get the bandwidth off the hill.
I do agree it's a game changer.
Yep, I noticed that too. Most of Perisher's would also be ready.
Falls & Hotham need all new hardware but the LAN can handle it except for the South Side at Falls which is still a low bandwidth wireless link (afasik).
Spitting a snowmaker straight at the image this morning
No, it puked natural all morning.
I gave the webcam the finger.
Merritts Cam providing better night time entertainment now.......groomers lights action, snow flurries.action Cam! Yippie
Perhaps kittens can provide vision of the night grooming activities while Team Bears are in Sth Melb. Much better than extreme sport bull...t.
