Booked shiga kogen for 5 nights
Will try to get up zao tomorrow. See how the weather plays
Been dumping all morning at shiga
IMO start of spring looking really solid for central japan
The young bloke at hakuba reported everything on hold this morning due to lightning. Hope that has since changed.
No where I could find either for lift status's in Zao, but it was very windy when I was there a few weeks ago and they are still able to run 1, if not more, gondolas, as well as the 3 chairs on the skiers left of the mountain. The wind can be brutal though, those snow monsters don't form for no reason!
I hope you are correct...but Can you pls explain to me why you think that is if you don't mind? I am hitting hakuba 3rd march for 7 days and starting to hope for at least one nipple deep pow day!
Yeah but what chairs are open? Only low ones here at yaketabetai/Oku.
read the charts
Been raining all morning here at Myoko.I predict snow two hours away. Not that I can go out, knee buggered.
This @Chondro . It gets very windy there, but it's mainly the peak that is super exposed. A lot of it is reasonably sheltered. Even on the most windy days they still had the top and bottom sections of the Zao ropeway running. Just avoid the top section unless you're super desperate to see what little you might be able to see of the ghosts. It was just about a total white out when I went up, and it's quite a flat trail. Utopia lifts can give you a pretty good look at them anyway.
The long term forecasts look pretty good ATM.
yes indeed, staying pretty cold
We skied all day don't know the area no lifts down where we went
@Tennex how long are you in shiga for ?
I arrive there tomorrow
Did Zao Onsen today. Wind was minimal suprinsingly, considering the forecast.
Snow was good quality up high, managed quiet a few face shots and some good stuff in the trees.
Down low was heavy snow but still good until it started to rain around mid day
Solidly rained until 3pm and came home pretty wet.
Good day tho, Probably wouldnt bother visiting the mountain again tho, Fairly flat for the most part, and not the easiest to navigate, Visibility was pretty poor tho,
We are at shiga again tomorrow. They are expecting good snow over night. It turned to rain for about an hour today. Snowed for the rest but a but not light and dry. More like Aussie condition. But still had a great day. I guess we will see what tonight brings.
Gondy opened at 12.30 at oku/yakebitaiyama. 30-40cm of heavy pow above 1700m. Turned to glue in bottom bit but worth it.
Shiga will be too windy tomorrow to get to any of the decent terrain IMO. We boosted out. Will be epic if the wind stays down
20 cm on the ground in yudanaka. Should be a big dump up top. See how the wind goes.
Tried to get the bus from Nagano to Shiga Kogen. Got told nope. Only to snow monkeys and get the train.
On a plus. Managed to sneak through in japan rail east south Hokkaido pass all the way to Nagano.
Dumping at Chitose Airport.... Probably lucky to get in without delay
Haha sometimes the JR ticket inspectors at the gates just wave you through without even looking, especially if you give them a friendly 'ohayogozaimassss'
Yup, I had to go out of my way to get my pass stamped the other day. Shink desk and gate staff at Koriyama didn't even bother, just gave me a ticket and waved me through. Also, sorry for off topic Sandy, this stuff really belongs in the Japan 2017 thread.
Oooohhhhh is that an on the ground report @Sandy?! You're in Hokkaido?
Yes..... Hired a car.... Snowing as usual!!!!
Just having lunch now at Kokusai and its dumping outside! Knee deep all morning with some windblown stashes waist deep
Just arrived at Shiga Kogen, Reports of 50cm last night and snowing well all day with a fair bit of wind.
Still snowing pretty heavy now
About 30cm in car park in Yuzawa and anther 30cm throughout day. Top chair opened at 10.30am and rode untouched all day
Shiga today is knee to waste deep in spots
Currently raining in shiga and fairly windy.
Had been since 4am
Might be a day to find a nice onsen.
Snowing up top ?
Freeze level looks like being around 2000m in central Japan, so it might be snowing above 1800m at Shiga Kogen
Dunno. Maybe the last 100m of vertical looking out my window still has snow in trees.
Rains stopped. Might go out for a look in a hour or two
2.3 degrees at Kutchan(near Niseko) this morning.... It may be raining at the bottom of Niseko, but not sure.
Rusutsu it's snowing down to the bottom.
Got to 3.9 degrees in Kutchan around 3pm, was sleeting/raining coming back into Niseko from Rusutsu around 4:30pm. Snowed all day at Rusutsu, I'd say because of an extra 250m of elevation.
Snowing at Niseko now.....
How were conditions are Rusutsu? Kind of bummed I didnt get to ski there this season
I hope the snow magnet is ready for Noz soon...........
Have to deal with Hokkaido first!!!!!
Unlike the lower part of Niseko (I heard it was foul lower down after about 2pm), Rusutsu was very good all day. Snowed all day, but not wet, even lower down.
Any one willing to have a go at predicting the 1st week of march for hakuba area please?
Looks like a good start to spring with N/e winds from what I can see
Likewise Niseko 1st+2nd weeks March. Looks like warming up with some r**n down low around the 2nd. Hope the colder temps return to more like this week
Rusutsu boot top to knee deep(on the steeper lee side slopes) today.....
Now it's sunny!!!!!
Sunny AND Snowing - I think I've only ever experienced that in Hokkaido. It's so freaky!
A bit of that at Zao this year. SunSnowShower, or is there a more elegant name for it?
Hokkaido temps looking good for the next few days then appear to be rising
Does anyone have a mid term view for a few days after the 28th/1st on precip and temps in central hokkaido / Furano area?
Forecasts seem to be jumping around a bit
Coming over for a quick ski tomorrow
I've had lots of that in Honshu
I observed 15 to 20 cms on my car in Tomamu this morning.
Strong wind from the west resulting in closure of gondola and late start of powder express quad. Got on a couple minutes after they opened it and the pow was very sweet and creamy up top.
The westward facing slope was wind packed and heavier pow.
Hiked up above old, defunct chair and skied the line under it. Not bad snow considering it was wind affected.
Winds looking to drop by tomorrow and the crowds increasing.
As we strolled through the Tower hotel (we are not staying there) the reception check-in line was huge. I suspect blow-ins from China/HK/etc from the sounds and behaviour.
Will try Sahoro for the first time tomorrow </OFF TOPIC>

Looking pretty solid!
Only thing to worry about seems the freeze levels.
