    Holy crap!!
    That's commitment!

I like the idea of committing to doing something like that every day, even if you miss one or two it'd still be pretty cool to be so dedicated. Might have to up the ante at home and commit to the gym every day if I want to last next Japan season in one piece!

Only a few weeks of the season left here. We shut down lifts on the 7th. Tateyama opened yesterday with a lazy 19 meter wall. This place is an amazing sightseeing spot as well as a BC ski zone if anyone is thinking to do a trip out here at this time of year.

Despite a slowish start, has been a pretty cracking season on Honshu. Here's to 2017-18 following suit.

Well, it was a La Nina year and things are changing again. But fingers crossed.

Not a slow start in Myoko. Seemed to have fared better than Hakuba.

Certainly a slow start in Hakuba this season.Looking at grass on 6 Jan, and the craziness of man made at Goryu. Then cleaning 60cm off the car on 8 Jan, with a further 1.5m over the next week.

    Visa Hops.

So I'm planning next season and for the first time the 90 day entry is a problem. So Visa Hop it is. Bit of Google foo to absorb the prior experiences of others (where, how long etc) and I find that since 2015 Japan has been offering a long stay tourist visa (6 months plus possible 6 month extension). Only drawback is you need 30 million yen in the bank. I kid you not! Who has a lazy 370k sitting in a bank account earning SFA?! So I called the consulate today to get a bit of further info, like does it have to be cash in the bank or can it be shares etc? Lady at the consulate asks me where I got the information because they only give 90 day visas and Australians don't need it in advance.

When I explained why I was asking she said "oh that's no problem, just go to Korea for a few days and come back". LOL

    So Visa Hop it is!

Any past hoppers got any tips for me? Anyone gone out and straight back? Or is it necessary to stay out for a while?

Day or two is fine. A lot of people head to Seoul, though HK is possible also from Chitose.

    Thanks MG

Looking at Seoul. I haven't been before (that's a plus), it's close (another plus), and on both Korean and JAL we can fly out of Tokyo and into Sapporo (handy as we will be in Tokyo with the boys doing the Mario Kart thing when we want to hop, and going directly back to Sapporo saves us time and faff).

PB was super keen on Vladivostok - no direct flights though....and well...Russia. I swore I'd never complete another Russian Visa application. They're a nightmare!

LOL You can fly to Vladivostok from Seoul. When I did it years ago it was around 4 flights a week. But you are right Russia Visa applications are a PITA - not just the application itself but the fact that they won't look at it until they receive confirmed hotel bookings for the duration. Vladivostok is interesting enough for a few days but for what you are trying to achieve hardly worth the effort. Seoul is definitely the easy option and is worth a few days.

Yeah, I'm quite excited to check out Seoul now.

    Just organising the flights.
Had to count the days - we will be hopping on day 84. Phew!

#3 son did 2 weeks in Seoul about 8 years ago - his first International training camp for Water Polo, he didn't see a lot outside the pool sadly.

A little bit of Seoul and Vladivostok in this old TR. http://forums.ski.com.au/xf/threads/kamchatka.11124/

edit. Come to think of it now if you wanted to justify the pain of getting a Russian Visa and break up your stay in Japan, then something like that could be an option. The Mi-8's are a tad noisier than AS350's though.. ;)

24 Hours minimum and you can fly straight back.
You may be asked on re-entry what your purpose of stay is, as they will think you are working illegally. As long as you have plenty of cash on you and tell them you are there to spend it as a holiday/tourist you'll have no probs.

    Thank you.

I do get the 'woah...many times to Japan' upon occasion when entering, never been an issue. I always laugh and tell them I love Japan and love to snowboard.

And on reentry we will have plenty of documentary evidence of upcoming touristy stuff as we are doing a week of off-snow prebooked classic tourist attraction stuff from Hiroshima Peace Park to Hanami Matsuri with our parents.

Hopefully we won't have a problem.

We went to Seoul after Japan this year, really amazing city and heaps of easy connecting (and short) flights. Plus they do the best fried chicken in the world!

Still the odd snowfall on Honshu. Grandeco had 15 CM overnight. Some resorts should make it through to Golden Week easily.

How's sakura going there? I have a non-skiing friend who left Australia on the 18th and was visiting Kyoto and Tokyo specifically for the cherry blossoms. Hope she didn't leave it too late.

    Ha!!
I'm just researching for next year, and popped in here to ask about the Hanami also.
The 18th of March, or 18th of April?? 18th of April is getting pretty late, but if shes missed the Tokyo blooms at their best there should be some in full bloom not too far a shink ride away.
https://www.jnto.go.jp/sakura/eng/index.php (looks like just Aomori right now)

I've seen the blossoms before but always been a week too early for the full bloom, Ueno was all set up with the ropes and bins and stuff though, so we got the idea of what it was going to be like in a week or so.

A non skiing friend was in Tokyo while I was in Niseko for them also. She had lots of beautiful photos and was home the 1st or 2nd of April. I'm wondering if I'm mentally tough enough to wrestle for a spot with my own tarp in Ueno Park or I should try and find some smaller less popular park to set up picnic.

Dead and buried in Tokyo, probably Kyoto too. Huge winds last weekend killed the lot overnight. You'll need to go somewhere cold.

would be perfect for anyone there now!!

Wont suit me next year sadly (barring a VERY early and severe heatwave) as Ill be looking to do the viewing thing 26 March - 3 April (ish). I wont totally lock stuff in until closer so that I can see what the forecast says. If it goes early we will do that first, if it is running later we will leave it to the day before we fly home.

    Did you expect less :pLOL

Anything can go wrong, but I'll generally research the inside and out, and listen to whatever anyone has to tell me on the subject before making decisions. I've benefited from the cumulative knowledge of this forum greatly over the years (not the least your own advice, thank you), and only hope I can give a little back from time to time.

(only locked in thing I cant change is #3 sons 21st birthday on 6th April that I need (want) to be home for, everything else can be moved to suit peak Cherry Blossom day :emoji_hibiscus:

There are early and late blooming cherry blossoms. There's a park at Hachioji (NW suburbs of Tokyo area), that has just about every variety (hundreds), so their bloom will last from early March until late May.
    Tama Forest Science Garden.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tama_Forest_Science_Garden

@PMG There may still be hope, as it's colder up at Hachioji!!! You can get there on the JR Chuo Line from Tokyo & Shinjuku Stations. (to Takao Station)

I'll suggest it but she's a Japan newbie so not sure how she'll go finding it. She is staying in Shinjuku though so she may do it. Hachioji looks good.

In mid February we had a wander around Nakameguro and Daikanyama and came across a little park containing what must have been the earliest flowering cherry tree in Tokyo. We sat on a park bench eating our lunch watching the people come and go. Entertaining viewing - especially the dog owners.

Daikanyama is such a cool little area! The only place I got a decent coffee in Japan.
Is it actually a cherry blossom? Because I think the plum blossoms come out earlier?

Plum blossoms are deep pink. The early flowering cherry blossoms are more pink than the usual varieties, but not as pink as the plums. There are two early flowering cherry blossoms near my place, and I think they were out in late Feb, iirc.

The plum blossoms are a stunning colour. I was fortunate enough to be the recipient of a massive bouquet of flowers last year in early March while in Hokkaido - few plum blossom branches in there - absolutely gorgeous!
