From memory they usually have a sale in April/May for the autumn that expires around the middle of December. But don't hang your hat on it. ;)
Skichanger would probably have a good idea about the early season sales re Jstar although she hasn't posted for quite a while.

    I'm also trying to book.
    Prices are exxy.
And I'm not looking at peak travel time either...

What are your dates? And into ADL? Singapore Airlines is around $1300-$1400 which is pretty reasonable.

Not sure of your exact dates, but for a 14th Dec departure travelling NRT-ADL-NRT I'm seeing flights for around $825 with Cathay.

Sorry, should've been clearer B2S. Going the other way with daughter coming back from school in Australia. Cathay are priced best of the full service but not real good for timing. Late arrivals in (can't make it to Myoko that night) and early flights out (overnight in Narita before). Otherwise it's long layovers in HK. Useful site - will keep checking.

Out around mid-Dec Crispy and back near end of Jan (basically all of school holidays). Sing have been giving me some really exxy prices when I bring them up and a lot of them have really long layovers (a day or more).

It's worth looking at Cathay out of Haneda also, as they have a lot of flights, and no curfew. (they have an after midnight flight that has minimal delay out of HK.

Looked at that one but involves a whole day layover in HK. Not bad in context but ends up more than 36 hours door to door.

Have been eyeing off Qantas flights out of Adelaide for a mid February departure for a bit over 1k return. Not sure about having to do the domestic to International transfer. Also, original plan was to visit Kyoto for a few days and Shinkansen trip Kyoto to Tokyo is not ideal compared to being able to fly into or out of Osaka.

Where would you be skiing? Kyoto isn't really near many decent resorts anyway so you would most likely go via Tokyo or Nagoya.

Pretty sure Shiga recorded higher snow fall total than Noz this year?

My (very tentative) plan would involve flying into Tokyo, then Shiga Kogen for 4-5 days, then back to Tokyo to fly to Sapporo for Niseko for a week, Sapporo to Osaka, Kyoto for a few days then fly out of Osaka. The Shiga Kogen part may or may not happen as I do realise that logistically it's a bit nuts. Would really like to ski for longer than a week though!

Sounds like a good plan! But you are moving around quite a lot. I'd say it would be less stressful to just ski Hokkaido, or Nagano pref. As you wont lose a full day transiting back to tokyo and then flying to Sapporo.

Do Kyoto first and forget Shiga? Fly out of Osaka to Sapporo and include the extra 4-5 days somewhere in Hokkaido. Seems like a lot of faffing around otherwise.
    Or equally what Froff said.

    Nozawa season total = 792cm
Shiga Kogen season total = 1088cm

I was at Shiga Kogen last weekend (Sat/Sun/Mon). I've never seen as much snow as that at Shiga!!!! Piles of snow in the Maruike Hall car park higher than the buses!!!

Niseko is pretty much locked in so you're probably right and I should save Shiga for another trip. Shame, because I went there with Sandy for a day trip last year and loved the place.

I could just stay in Niskeo a few extra nights and do some days in Kiroro / Rusutsu. Furano could also be an option to extend my skiing but it doesn't look that big and I'm not really big into off piste and not sure how easy it is to get to / from.

You also have Moiwa and Sapporo Teine in the general area too, enough to keep you busy for 2 weeks easy if you have a car.

Furano is pretty big and you definitely dont have to be into off piste there.Top to bottom on the Furanus side is an absolute leg burner.

Furano is certainly big enough for a few days even without off-piste. Has quite good vertical (Has hosted World cup Super G races). It is also easy to get to by train from Sapporo or Chitose although you have to change trains on the way.

So if you can get flights into/out of Kansai, then just ski Hokkaido and stop over in the Kansai region (Osaka/Kyoto/Nara) on the way there or back.

What I really need is for Cathay Pacific to have a sale so I can fly into Sapporo and out of Osaka

Will do some more research on Furano.

Just a word of caution fellow travellers.I booked two rooms at APA hotel Ueno by phone from M-G`s place.I couldnt get any digs on line so I called Expedia and booked over the phone. When we checked the credit card statement the bill was about one third more than what I was quoted. So I just spoke to Expedia and no problems they gave me 9000 yen credit. No questions asked, did not check voice recording.Makes me very wary of telephone bookings now.Say one thing charge another.By the way hotel was excellent.Tiny room of course but near new.Go to Ueno Keisei station,up the stairs and cross the road!

You're right, it's not that crazy. Probably not ideal for a first timer but I'm not exactly a Japan virgin :D

I got all excited by an email for a Cathay Pacific sale but it's only for flights up until November 2017. Just need to stay patient.

Overnight in Ueno, 7.26am Shink to Nagano, arrive Nagano 8.43am, 9.05am bus to Shiga, arrive Ichinose 10.30am. Plenty of time for a 4 hour lift ticket on day 1.

Oh, there are two of those APA hotels then. I stayed basically right next door to the Okachimachi one at Hotel Sardonyx on this trip. Well kept little hotel, brilliant location, 5 minutes walk from the stations and just about part of the markets. the included breakfast was pretty underwhelming though.

Yeah, the snowdepth of Kiroro is 400cm now and ski resorts in Hokkaido and Aomori( = Hakkoda mountains) are usually very good in March too.

Snow in Niseko the last 3 days. Not heaps, but the word about town is it's like midwinter out the gates. I can't visually confirm as I'm with low inter girlfriends so we are playing low in the easy stuff.
Had a day on skis - yep, I still suck LOL

Apart from one fast lap through konayuki I spent the day hauling my girlfriend up and coaching her through turns - hats off to ski and board instructors!!
Tomorrow she's back on skis so it'll be a cracker - still snowing on and off.

    Fantastic March here in Hakuba.

    Had so many good days.
Bottomless powder in resort at Cortina two days ago, same again yesterday at 47/Goryu, and then top to bottom powder on Happo north faces today.

Looks like more coming in from the 27th/28th.
