Thanks for the ride last two days @Sandy and co. Good times, good conditions, good location. Much appreciated. Scott and Famous Fred from Tahoe were also appreciative.

    Hmmmm..... Sahoro.
Interesting. Gondola line was long (it was a Saturday). Full of Club Med instructors and their guests.
Skiing was good, until we discovered the tree skiing...then it was great. Sadly, this discovery was made after lunch.
I rate it.....but after a some fresh snowfall.
We got introuble for "ducking the rope". Apparently, 10 metres further down, where there's no rope, and its OK to go from there. Go figure...Ahh......Japan.
I would not stay at the Club Med facilities. I did look at the packages for Club Med before we left, but they were way overpriced. Given what I saw, Im glad I didn't stay there.
OK, what else do I remember? The new area, in the north, that opened up this year was partially closed. Out of all the North facing courses the only one open was the N3 Challenge course (imaginatively named). It was hard packed and not a lot of fun.
However, after lunch we decided to venture into the trees over in the south side....wow! Why hadn't we found these earlier?
So we lapped these up till the end of the day. Not steep, but fun tree skiing which, for most of the times, ended up under the old chair.
I'd go back for another day...but only when I know it's fresh.
Oh...and for some stupid reason I thought there would be lots of eating options on the mountain. There's only two. We had lunch at the bottom of the hill at the main one. Everyone was lining up for the ticket vending machine. Opposite from that was a tempura bar.....no ticket required, just pay there.
Tempura (made fresh, in front of us), rice and miso...for 1000 yen. Win!

All the Club Med people have all food included in their packages so they all head back to the resort for lunch and won't be buying on mountain.

I have question for my planning of next year's trip. Given Chinese New Year falls on Friday 16 February 2018 how does that translate into busy dates? I'm still confused as to whether it's busy for the week before or after the date.

CNY will generally only affect Hakuba and Niseko. Nozawa and Myoko somewhat. Skiers based in East Asia have not yet discovered other resorts.

We were in Zao Onsen for CNY this year, and they were fully booked for that period. M_G is right though in that it would only affect the more well known resorts. I'd be interested to know if it affected the Yuzawa/Naeba resorts?

True, but they go to Zao for the snow monsters, not the skiing.

Looking at going to Niseko but the current plan has me there starting approximately 22 February so should be okay. Also considering doing Shiga Kogen the week before but sounds like that should be fairly quiet.

Saturday was a mad house in Nozawa, although if you had kept an eye out during the week, there were boot and knee deep to be had away from the peak on Saturday.
Madarao on Sunday was very hard packed with some ice in spots. Once the sun hit and softened it was better, but the knees were saying enough. A pretty good hill but with the snow past it's best in that area of Japan, it was time to leave.

That week we were in Shiga Kogen. Stayed at Hotel Villa Ichinose. We had bluebird, then wet snow for a day, then temps dropped ..... full on snow fall all day of the 21st Feb, followed by this day after the storm. One of those days, 50+cms of new snow on the ground, bluebird no wind. It was a special day!!!!! This trip we did Shiga, Madarao/Tangram, Myoko.
The best we received at Madarao was 10+cms one night, then days of sunshine. Similar in Myoko as well. Days of sunshine, one night/day of 30+cms, then back to sunshine.

Just looking at options now for mid-December. The cheapest I can get is about $1,100 return ex-ADL on Jet*. All the full service airline prices are off the wall.

So, Jet* sales - does usually anything come up for early-mid Dec? Just wondering whether to bide my time or not.

Been checking this thread but not sure if the patterns are still the same.
