I have been a passenger day and night when travelling from Toyko to Hakuba using the Chuo service. The roads from the airport skirt around the city and I have not been in traffic, hence finally being brave enough on the 6th trip to hire a car (also we just love shinkansen trips). My original question is not about driving in Tokyo, more the conditions of the roads. We have always travelled on no snow days.

But realistically, you don't have to go through Tokyo.
Head on the Bayshore route from Haneda Airport to Yokohama, then Yokohama - Machida Expressway (route16), Tomei Expressway, Ken-o Expressway to Chuo Expressway.

I drove from Iiyama to the Yokohama - Machida interchange, and it was 7100yen, one way.

Skirting around Tokyo from Narita Airport is more hassle than with Haneda Airport

So, for those looking at car hire ex Tokyo to Nagano Mtns, one can expect that the return cost is about 16,000yen in tolls plus petrol. Therefore, the to / return drive about 24,000 Yen in total (obviously depending on car)?

    Around that....
Tolls have gone up around Tokyo.... Or at least, they've made the tolling distance longer, so if you do short stretches, it costs more.
    Top tip :
When you get a toll booth receipt with a bar code around Tokyo, make sure you show it to the next toll booth guy before handing over more money. The fee (1300yen) covers quite a distance.

24,000Y in toll/petrol costs for the return journey. It really depends how many people you have in your group/family as to weather it's a more cost effective way to get to Hakuba. However the benefit of a car in hakuba....................

Actually didn't include 2 day car rental for the return trip cost, so real cost is more like 36,000Yen for a Tokyo to Nagano Mtns return cost (depending on car).

I would have hired in Nagano if it was more cost effective. A family of 4, this is the best option. Plus we want the freedom of a car in Hakuba. Spent so much money on taxis in the past.
The best option would be hiring a car in Hakuba for a week of our 2 week stay though they were booked out in October.

Nice Snowy Day at Appi today. Very cold & windy & only half the mountain open.

Not many people here + i've seen less then 10 westerners so far.

2 new lifts - but i wish they had build hooded ones - as it was freeeeezing today!

Hoping they open the rest of the mountain tomorrow as it hasn't stopped snowing since yesterday.

-3 all day in Upper Hakuba Valley today with wind scwals on and off, maybe -12 with wind effect. Iwatake had only 1 lift running for part of the day, with the top of Tsugaike closed for most of the day lower half in reasonable shape. Light snow mixed with sunshine all day.
Good day on the hill if dressed appropriately

It's been a slow start to the season - but this week should make a big difference. We've found 1 open treed area, after bashing through some scrub. Haven't seen much as so much closed, but looks like good potential. Hopefully more lifts open tomorrow & I'll have more to report on. Definitely a lot easier to find stashes as not many people about. 1 strange thing is that they close a lot of lifts around 3pm - especially the ones that go up high.

this is how busy it is... 40cm overnight, they open the gondola around 11:30, snowing heavily - queue to get onto gondola is 10-15 people. That's it. Get to the top & get off & the Japanese skiers stop to take photos!

Anyone know where to get one of those lift pass holders that the locals seem to have on the local hills? Like a clear sleeve that has a strap around your arm? Nearly lost my Kokusai pass on the first run just clipping it to my jacket. After that it had to stay in my pocket

You can have one of ours, we've got about six of them. ;) Depending where you are any of the accessories outlets near ticket offices should sell them.

Definitely should have. But feel a little shy about approaching strangers to ask "excuse me sir, but are you The Dark Lord ";)

Kokusai is an RFID pass though so shouldnt be any need to be visible. Acts on sensor. Had mine hidden in the specific sleeve pocket on my jacket and no issues.

But yea for some of the smaller resorts will need armband.

Those temps sound balmy. ;) It was -26c (-33c with windchill) when the lifts started this morning here in Fernie Canada. Even with hand warmers it was COLD. :emoji_penguin:

Top lifts on windhold at Kiroro today (Thursday 12th), but lower mountain was giving over the head shots for fun.

    Cold though, -12 C

Great first day back on Fantasy Island.

Plenty of love today in Hakuba. Snowed all night and all day, still snowing now. Generally medium to heavy falls. Have had at least 40cm in valley. I knocked 15 cm off my car roof this morning, 15 cm off after skiing today and there is 15 cm on car roof now since I stopped driving tonight, in 2.5hrs.
Has anyone invented snow blowers for car roofs yet??
Wind has been a factor in exposed areas, but snow dropping vertically in other protected spots.
All family skied cream until lifts shut today, with tracks being refilled at least 3 times during the day. Location undisclosed.

So I arrive in Hakuba next Thursday, whih seems to be good timing based on Sandy's forecast above. Only issue is we cant venture too far from Happo with kids going to evergreen ski school. Is there enough to keep people interested just in Happo or should we make an effort to get to one of the other nearby resorts? The shuttle doesn't take too long right? Thanks

I'd more than happily ski Happo for days, particularly with good snow. It's very easy to get to either iwatake or 47 from Hakuba, 47 might even be next door if you're staying in Echo Land.

I think/believe Evergreen also run ski school at Iwatake and Cortina. You may be able to all move around for a few days?

The shuttle, or bus to Cortina is at least 40 mins from memory. I haven't been to Hakuba since 2013 so have no idea how crowded Happo is now. But in my three visits from 08-13 ,by 2013 I noticed a loooooot more AUS and Scanadanavians around the place.

Heard them in the dining room of our hotel each morning over breakfast. Everyone was else was quietly munching away as they shouted orders organising their hero trips to Cortina.

Lots of fresh out there this morning, and very windy at times. Another 50cm on the car roof this morning after yesterday's 50cm and day before of around 40cm.
My unofficial measure would be 150cm in 3 days, and that's in the valley. Don't know how much up top as cloud and wind has kept me low at Tsugaike and Goryu..
It's very deep in spots, so be careful out there next few days, and ski with a buddy

Our family has arrived after a pretty seamless travel journey on the overnight flight with ANA. We were picked up from the airport in 10 mins to collect our hire car at Nippons office. We then had to pick up our etc and wifi router from a post office down the road (ToCoo arrangement). Nothing short of a miracle that a man opened the door to help me at 7am (was meant to open at 9).
After a lot of searching he found our package. We have ended up with a Mazda premacy that fits our 4 bags and large snowboard bag perfectly with a lot of room.
Driving out of Tokyo was a breeze, except no one seems to follow the speed signs!
30km out of Nagano now and it is snowing.
So glad we finally have a car.
