Sheesh. Did i start an avalanche with the booze word ? How else do you calm the missus when when you have been riding the mountain all day and she has been stuck in the valley ?

There is quite the difference between living in a ski resort and going on a ski holiday.

I'd often train, diet and be alcohol free leading up to a ski trip knowing we would be with friends who ski hard and then party hard - but its just for a weekend. So you burn that candle at both ends and enjoy your friends company, then come home to detox and get back on a healthy living track.

I sure as heck couldn't do that for a month, let alone four months!
Even though we will have serial guests coming who might like to party like Armageddon is imminent.

B2S mentioned alcohol-free private time with the Mrs. Which is fine.

But what if you -require- large quantities of booze to enable private time with the Mrs?

I don't think Avalanche is licenced, but I'm sure Sean would see it as an improved customer service!

I have an accommodation business and I'm definitely over trying to quieten people drinking late at night and into the wee hours. Nowadays I explain to people that it is a scientific fact that alcohol voices get louder and louder due to the white noise in their ears caused by the booze. You speak louder to compensate. Even a whisper can sound like shouting to people asleep nearby. Whilst I think there's some truth to it, I just made it up, but it seems to work. I haven't had any argumentative biffo for years, for which I am very grateful.

I don't know if you absorb the bumps any better, but you worry less about them and seem to glide right over the top of them. I found that one schooner is useless, 2 mellows out the legs and helps you to glide, whilst 3 turns you into a danger to others. The 2-schooner status (different to others as I'm 120kg) helps you to "look forward" rather than looking down at what you are skiing over. I've often heard instructors yelling to their pupils to "look at me" and you can see that when they stop worrying about every inch of surface in front of them, they just 'glide' down the hill.

Best effort I have seen was in the car park at Akakura Kanko. Elderly Japanese guy opened the beer just befor he put his boots on at about 9am in the morning. Though I suspect it may have been his one and only beer of the day so he was ok to drive home.

mmm sounds a bit like inside nvoices for kids. But might be something I use if necessary at Madarao. Not sure how much the noise will carry from the restauarant/bar to the bedrooms on the level above.

This season in Zao Onsen all the Taiwanese tourists that were staying in our lodge would drink multiple beers with breakfast before going out skiing o_O

I've never drunk while skiing, not even a beer at lunch time. Drinking is for after skiing.

Although once when a young bloke we hit the happy hour at the Sundeck in Perisher and smashed massive amounts of cheap bourbon and we skied from there to the skitube. I couldn't understand why I couldn't turn my skis very well until I got to the tube and realised I forgot to do my boots up.

There must be a few on here that have fond memories of the Harvey Happy Hour. Skiing back down the road afterwards was always a ...challenge.

Harvey hour still happens. Pretty mild these days - RSA has diluted the mix.

Unsure if this is off topic...

Surely the "Krazy Kanguruh" has been the setting of more than a few of the forum's readers mixing alcohol and skiing, resulting in an "interesting" ski home - sometimes straight over the balcony.

So back on topic (per the thread title). I can ski ok - many would say very well. But I see people who ski with complete mastery. So stable at high speed. So smooth. And so seemingly always in control (piste skiing anyway). Last Thursday I skied down Excelerator (Perisher (Blue Cow)) a few times (kid break). I saw a group of over 10 expert skiers practising their turns on the same run. I saw them again Friday. It really struck me "I love skiing but I'm not very good at it".

I would not trade my two years in the snow for anything.

    My God I felt alive.

Some days I even went out skiing.

Moguls skiers? They were working on Toppa's around then. I know they were skiing rock garden around then as well.

And if these were the group you saw there may have been some world class skiers in the group.

I believe the ones wearing beige jackets with 'Australia' written on the back know how to ski.

Gebi of FallsCreek shop fame tells a great story. He is a very good skier. Every summer he goes back to Arlberg where until recently he was a guide and instructor.

He was free skiing and took a very difficult line. Pleased with himself, at the bottom he looked up and saw 2 not local guys coming down the same line, skiing it beautifully too. He couldn't believe it. They stopped next to him. "Who are you? How did you do that?". They lift their goggles - Phil & Steve Mahre.

Snowboarding is one of my greatest passions in life through it was a rough road before. I even injured my knee 3 years ago and I rested for 6 months. Well, everything's back to normal now. Just a little careful. LOL
