I can't claim that video as it isn't mine but I can vaguely remember that kind of snow as a kid.

Bloke in the lodge told me he dropped avalanche Gully (edit: on Feathertop) in June 2000 - only possible due to huge dump with no cornice. And did it on a snowboard. Truly Epic

Avalanche Gully on Feather is skiable every year. The size of the cornice is usually reflective of wind loading, but it's usually possible to find a way in.

That was my first year of Mt Hotham. We stayed in the old SCV lodge at Blue Ribbon and spend most days lapping the Blue Ribbon triple.

The week I was there we never saw blue sky and it rained half the time. Still, cover was good and the terrain was great.

Has anyone ventured over to the middle yet? If so, how is Mary's looking?

I wonder if anyone has footage or pics from 1984 - that was even more amazing - the year the Harrietville road was closed (lost) for something like 16 days in a row. It was pretty much "staff only" skiing. When they finally managed to find and dig the road out, the shaft at the base of the summit had the green color of arctic ice. When we dug my car out, (near the 1750 apartments), it was 3m down the roof!

Well the thing about Avalanche Gully is in fact (surprise!) it avalanches. I got caught up in a whopper a few years back. A friend died in it a couple years later. There are always icy patches, cliffs and terrain traps. The SE face and gullies offer a better profile and safer skiing, and the NE ridge off Nth Feather is safe and sublime. Happy to take anyone along for a day trip, but it's a big day, and there are a LOT of transitions, so pattern bases are preferable.

All that area completely unskiable on weekend, needed at least a decent half meter.

Fully agree, the first time I skied Avalanche Gully was in the massive 1991 season. I hit an icy patch and fell over, couldn't self arrest because of the speed, I only stopped when I slammed into a rock face. On the same weekend another guy fell in avalanche gully and rearranged his face (pre helmets) on some rocks. Hellfire gully and the other SE facing runs are just awesome, you need to carry plenty of spare gear just in case, ice axe and crampons etc are a must I've had few climbs out where the gullies and ridges have turned to ice. Come late Sept and Oct you get huge piles of avalanche rubble in the gullies, but the hard work is worth it. If you have the right gear Feathertop's runs are awesome.

Can anyone give an indication of what the snow cover is like for sightseeing around either the Big D or Dinner Plain? My non-skier brother is on holiday in Bright and wants to see some snow, build a snowman, take silly Instagram pictures etc.

No need for them to go to DP, Hotham around Big D Davenport area will have snow and places to build a snowman

I am considering a NW spur ascent on Mt. FT on Sunday or Monday 16th or 17th of July. I will take snow shoes, kahtoola microspikes and an ice axe. I plan to stay /snow camp at MUMC hut. If I have any energy left and the weather is benign then I may try to get over to Fed. hut on the same day and light the fire inside the hut. MUMC hut has no heater! :-0 .If I do this trip then I will report the BC snow conditions on Mt. FT incl. the condition of the NW spur track.

Dinner Plain avoids the need for gate entry though.

Assuming there is any snow though.

I think they'll be okay, I talked them through where to park, how to get the free bus around the village and warned them against walking out on the ski run at the Big D!
True. A quick scan of recent Instagram pics suggests no snow. My brother is happy to pay gate entry as there's about four of them, so it doesn't work out to be too exxy.

What is the Razorback looking like now? Is there continuous snow cover from The Great Alpine road to Mt. FT.?
I could , if the weather allowed it, try another attempt at the Bon Accord spur/ Razorback/ Bungalow spur loop with white season gear.I am not going out over the Razorback in iffy weather !

    -3 at 8:30 this morning.
Light wind. Vis ordinary, not braille.
The man made is excellent for morning riding. Mostly bushes and rocks beyond.

First slide for the season. There is fun to be had. All snowmaking areas are pretty good. Cornice and black snake have been opened. Still need a lot more snow to get non snowmaking areas up and running.

Skiing really well - especially in man made areas. The natural fall over the past couple of days has made the place LOOK incredible and opened up terrain.

Packed with people. Slalom is a nightmare for people. But the snow is holding up well - really enjoyable actually. Easy turns.

Was with the young family so didn't get to turn right from the Heavenly chair. Will tomorrow.
