Official reports commence Saturday June 11.
The eve of the season opening.
Some progress with snowmaking on Main Street :
Went up today for a while. When we got there it was drizzle with a little snow mixed in but by late morning it was snowing properly. Still going when we left about 2pm.
Good to see the museum up and running again too.
Where is the museum now? Last time I paid a visit it was in the old post office
In the Panabode building next to base of FC Express chair.
We will hea up tomorrow for a look.
Snow guns have been firing up. Beautiful sunny day today.
A bit of natural on the ground but not heaps.
Falls filling in nicely according to the cams,
boy someones been playing with the cams overnight , most of them have moved IMHO
The cams seem to move between 3 or 4 different positions on each shot.
Towers is expected to run this weekend
The powder piggies will be there on the weekend!! Oink Oink
The base that has laid down over the past couple of days is pretty wet and heavy......not powder but just what is needed. Temps have hovered around 0 or just below but are predicted to drop significantly tonight. This wet cover will freeze into a base as hard as a cat's head and the forecast snowfall will mean things opening up on the weekend and into next week. the forecast low maximums and low guest load should hopefully see snowmaking running 24 hours a day for a few days.
On another note, always cracks me up this time every year to see 'seasonal locals' heading out to 'ride' 15cm of poor cover who will be poohooing 70cm of spring snow in September as too slushy and not worth 'riding'.
We need a bigger ruler on the Cederwood Apartments Cam - any one local who could oblige. Even a stick would help.
Unfortunately I've got commitments elsewhere this weekend. It's always good to get those first few runs in even if it is only main street. Next week for sure...
Thanks for the update @Hully , keep them coming.
I'll ride anything as long as I'm riding. (Except ice..nup not interested in that)
Thanks for the on ground reports @Hully. It would be nice if someone from Falls Creek actually updated the reports section on ski.com
The report on the resort site is time stamped 9:51 today. I think ski.com.au used to pick up feeds once in the morning, maybe 7ish. Maybe @Richard or @Ian D or a mod can confirm.
If the report changes during the day, e.g. Windhold or mechanical problems, then the resort site will usually show that, but not reflected here. So most of the time this is a great place to check the report but sometimes it pays to double check at http://www.fallscreek.com.au/snowreport
From the lift co
Falls Express and Mousetrap lifts will operate today, and we're opening Wombat’s Ramble and Broadway, groomed from top to bottom.
For the weekend, we're planning to open Towers tomorrow (Saturday) giving it another full day and night of snowmaking to ensure it's in shape for the season. And we're likely to open Drover's Dream (with a small park) on Sunday.
Sun Valley isn't far behind either, and Mountain Operations will be working to open more lifts and terrain in that area as early as possible next week.
The official report is ambigious. It says in the activities section that skiing and boarding is closed..
I'll believe that is what you saw, but checking it now says:
Falls Express and Mousetrap lifts are open today. Wombats Ramble opens today. Towers lift and Main Street will open tomorrow. Drover's Dream (and a little terrain park) will open on Sunday. Sun Valley (Scott's and Ruined Castle) to open early next week. Check the app for updates.
Skiing and snowboarding today! The BFF Plan (Bring A First-timer for Free) starts tomorrow. The Village roads are covered in snow and car free. Ski-in ski-out starts now.
and shows FC Express, Mouse Trap & Gull as turning. Activities shows skiing & snowboarding open
Yes it changed a few minutes after I posted.
Issue is the Fallscreek changed their data feed this year and notified us basically on the first day of the season. The format of their data feed had a unique issue with it that was not compatible to our system. We went back to them and pointed out the web standard that they weren't using and requested that they fix that. I have just had notification that they have now done this so their feed will be incorporated into our reports shortly. Once that is done then it will update here whenever they update theirs, until then, nope.
Er mah gawd
Skiing this morning was very good. Cover was really good in open areas and snow condition was surprisingly nice, particularly in areas away from snow making. If winter 2016 improves from what was essentially the opening day for lift operations it promises to be a good one. I see no reason why more terrain/lifts in Sun Valley wouldn't open up as this week progresses.
Chucked on the skins and went for a walk, Rocky Knolls had a few fun turns and snuck first tracks on Ruined Castle. Beautiful weather and we didn't see anyone else out there.
Yep a suprisingly great morning out! Just stayed out of the morning winds by hitting the trees in an around last hoot an milky way plenty of fresh lines to share til lunchtime and bugger all queues considering. I mainly only went up to try out some new skis more for O/S than OZ but 109 underfoot was quite useful lol.
Reports updating (partially) now. Basic report information is now there, and lift status's. XC and run status's still to come soon.
Great day skiing on the lifts open. Snow conditions on piste much firmer than yesterday but still very pleasant, off piste better than you would expect and a lot of fun. Summit opening tomorrow. By appearances I suspect that the only thing stopping the whole backside terrain being open is a lack of patrons until next week.
Summit opening before July!? Good times.
Me the boy and a mate went up for the first time yesterday. Lovely day with blue skies and not too many people around. We were all a bit rusty after the summer so it was nice just to play on drovers, highway and main street. No grooming to last hoot, summit and a few others due to only having a small base to work with but all the groomed runs including scottys that opened that morning were fast and fun.
video clip of the day.....excuse the poor riding skills. we all stacked it early on and the firm base gave us a quick reminder of how cruel a past time it can be.
nice video....Team Bears enjoyed watching that.....just nice fluid movement
Great video! Thanks for sharing
A great teaser for us cos we're heading down in August. Cant wait!
@ the Panda at the end of the video
Oh so jealous!!! Two days to go & not counting
Does anyone know why Lakeside POMA is not open as yet? It was closed when we went last year as well. Does it ever open? Also, why isn't Monkey Bars POMA open?
takes quite a bit of work and a whole heap of snow to level the run back up with both lakeside and international poma. No reason why monkey bars is not running as its a nice level surface back up.....gets very little use so maybe a numbers thing.
Speaking of lifts, was wondering the other day why towers wasn’t built to the highest point….say 50m to the left as you look up main street. Surely this would do away with lakeside and even drovers with a bit of earthmoving and cat track making at the bottom.
Wouldn't want that.
Removing those lifts mentioned would only cause more crowding and longer queues at the bottom of Towers
If parking at Windy Corner, is it easy to jump onto Wombats Ramble? Or is it easier to park near falls creek sports.
possibly wind protection , lakeside of course is really in another valley which of course could be serviced by the same chair to your point.
If you are up early and can score a park near FC Sports, then that is the better option.
Wombat's Ramble run is very close, but uphill, from the Windy Corner carpark
It would become Falls Creek's Heavenly Valley chair....trying to access to much varied level terrain with one lift. A chair from around Lakeside load to near the top of Monkey Bar is the go.
that would make a huge difference
If we are building a new chair in this particular area, what about a chair from lakeside load to top of eagle ? you can still get to monkey bar and also opens up other directions
It would mean a traverse to ski 'traditional Lakeside', would need to pass over Monkey Bar ropeline, the traverse from Eagle back over to Cloud 9 area is already unpopular, hence to push to realign Eagle.
Unload at high point between Monkey Bar and current unload would maintain smooth logic of current lifts but open what is already great terrain through v Darkside etc; provide traverse free access to Scotts/Castle; not crowd Scotts/Eagle unload.
True, it is the most congested stop on the mountain but only for a third of the season. Would be nice if the other two lifts were moved to say the bowl at the back of summit or the area from the top of castle out past south face….that would open up a heap of new terrain. Just seem overkill to have 3 lifts servicing half a dozen short runs
Drovers and Towers....along with FEX/Halleys are Falls Creek's bread and butter. When the whole mountain is open I guess that 70% of patrons are skiing East of Lakeside.
Lakeside Poma last year didn't get going again til later in season cause the cable got stuffed and they had to replace it which took ages. As others said it's probably a numbers thing as everything costs money and it means more staff more wages etc etc their mission is complete after you park your car, having a good time usually falls back to you to arrange lol.
Yep, we do this when its real busy and the bottom car parks are full. On the way back down you can ride/ski from wombats right up to the café/day shelter.
No, that was International.
I would suggest that commercial decisions have been made this week. There has been hardly been anybody up here, and most would be skiing on Season Passes so revenue this week would be poor I'm guessing.
