Do ......... or do not. There is no try.
Yes, Master Yoda.
That's only because you had longer skis
Leave has been approved.
Phone call to venue has been made. Only lingering concern is my ability to ski in powder...fark... only seen it 4 days in the 3 years I've been skiing (once in Japan (did not do well), once in Whistler (did better but was suffering with a cold), twice in the USA (skied the bowls quite well - the people I was skiing with said they weren't going to wait for me, I ended up waiting for them on the steeper stuff ). Guess we'll find out soon enough...
Moving money around to pay for the deposit.
Powder is easy. It is the different variations of wind, sun & rain affected new snow sometimes on the same run that need a bit of practice to get used to. In Alaska you will almost certainly encounter some surface sloughing which is a another new experience. Hence my suggestion of a couple of NZ heli days so you can recognise and deal with some of those conditions.
Go hard DSNS. You can't do what you don't try.
Like the man said, just try to round up a crew of similar ability and it will be the trip of a lifetime.
Got taken out by my own slough this year in Canada while cat skiing. Didn't see it coming and went down so fast it wasn't funny. Well it was funny for everyone else I suppose.
Had a little bit of that myself this year. I like to call it an "Andylanche". Makes me feel great, even if I don't ski great.
I can tick one off after I've decided whether to go the Wildberry Cheesecake or the Caramel Torte
Only 365 sleeps to go.
Go for it DSNS.
I saved enough to come with you but I am buying a concrete slab ....... and a horse !!!!!
One day, 60th birthday 2020, the kids can pay
Happy 49th DSNS!
May every day this year see the excitement build.
Get heaps of time in this year and whilst doing such, get heaps of advanced lessons in too. Long prep is really good. Then when the time comes, even though you'd probably been quite a few months off the sticks, it's like riding that old bike. You will instantly remember how best to do it.
....Oh, and happy b'day!
I am there in week 7 !!!!!!
Woot, that's 2 of us. When does it come a Min-Sic ???
Don't worry about the terrain , if you can ski that run at Breck , you will be ok , but as Heinz mentioned on fly days you do go hard , and it is possible to do 12 runs in a day .
It will be a good week I have organised 7 mates to come .
This is some edits from my group last year .
That footage... I'm awestruck...
I've paid the 50% deposit to Points North.
I shopped around for the cheapest airfare online and got Flight Center to match (from that really cute girl I met on the plane coming back from Sydney; she's from Switzerland, skis and thinks our ski fields are novelties)
I've organised travel insurance (I'm with HCF and they sell QBE ski insurance at a discounted rate)
For the last two months my workday morning routine is to get up before dawn, walk up Mt Taylor (8km) then leisurely cycle into work (13km)
Each weekend I try and do something a bit more challenging, eg walk up one of the taller mountains around here (Black Mountain/Mt Ainslie/Mt Tennant/Isaac Pines) or now that the magpies have stopped swooping, ride my road bike (Jindy - Charlotte Pass last weekend)
Only 4 months to go
Endless lunges and squats
I would be pointing north just thinking about it.
I sometimes do it from the Sulwood Drive side. Might spot you sometime.
Come up for the Christmas get together up there.
Will do if i am in town then.
Tell us more about the girl
If I survive this Alaska trip in one piece, I promised to go see her about Europe in 2018
Should make that "in Europe about 2018"
6am Dec 15th at the summit if you're around.
Didn't see this update - been tooing and froing about going back as one of the guys I went with has a group of 3 going there in Week 6. I've already booked too many trips though from Jan - April (35 nights booked at Whistler, a week in Palm Springs for Modernism Week and I'm trying to fit a 4 day trip to Revvie in there as well ) so I'm going to have to say no to him Taking his 24yo daughter as part of the crew - she rips.
DSNS - heaps of core and leg work is the key. The first drop in is daunting but as soon as you get on the pitch you'll find it come every naturally. They'll suss you out over the first day and reshuffle groups if they need to (and can) then they'll just gradually up your game, depending on how hard you want to push yourself.
Make sure you use the sauna (it's awesome after a long day) book a massage and get in quick as she books out fast. Very jelly - you'll have a blast !
@Nozawaman are you there Week 6&7 or 7&8?
I will be back there one day though, that's for sure.
I'm back for 7 !!!!!
Oh, for some reason I thought you were there for 2 weeks.
Hope both you guys get a killer week!
Just a tad over 2 months before wheels up
I'm flying via Seattle both ways so I've booked overnight accommodation near the airport. Just need a few more long bicycle rides in the legs and I'll be as ready as I'm ever going to be. I must admit to some nerves about where I'm going.
Nerves, fear, apprehension - it's all good. You know you are alive! Your trip looks like you will diving into the deep end; no quicker way to learn. I am very envious and inspired. Have a great trip?
This trip is getting closer and closer.
It was too hot and windy this weekend to do anything outside so I amused myself with some indoor activities.
I stuck some ski trail maps up on the wall
I bought a pair of gloves and sent them onto Alaska as they don't ship to Oz.
And I bought a walky talky set
6 weeks and counting
That's gone fast!
Can't wait for your TR!
Need some skis
Yep, will be using a combo of Kikus, Katana’s, Shiros and Kiru’s.
Ha ha, very good.
Sounds like the Points North rental fleet. They wouldn't have seen many rocks.
I'm so jealous. I knew getting remarried and having a second bunch of kids would bite me in the arse at some point. I'm at that point.
They give you walkie talkies there .
Bit late now...
Breaker one nine this here's the rubber chicken.
10:4 Good Buddy!
Let that f***er roll, ten four.
We just ain't-a gonna pay no tourist visa.
