    Is in April next year...

So far I have identified 3 x possible options:
    • Stay home and eat cheesecake, possibly by myself
    • Finish off the State 8 challenge (WA/NT/SA peaks should be the only ones left to do by then) or
    • A weeks heli-skiing in AK
Come to think of it, there's only one of those that is really appealing looking at @luvthabumps and @Nozawaman 's reports. Alaska in Apr 2017! :woohoo:

Ignore the significance or otherwise and do what you want to do anyway.

Mind you a friend did his 50th in style by taking LSL and doing 3 moths in Telluride.

P.S. @DidSurfNowSki I wouldn't have picked you for an old phart... welcome to the club

This year's travel budget was blown on:
    • A stroll up Mt Ossa (#4 of my State 8 quest)
    • Driving across the Nullarbor and back with my 2 teenage daughters in the middle of summer in the Honda Jazz (I also made them sleep in tents with the flies and Mozzies )
    • A 2 week ski trip in the US
My 49th will definitely be sitting at home eating cheesecake!

    My 50th however...

Committing myself this far out also leaves 13 months to prepare for it.

Just got a response back from Points North Heli-Adventures. Week 7 in 2017 is the go.

I've 99% convinced myself I'm doing this. Tomorrow I'm going to see if I've got enough leave accrued at the moment to cover it. Then once that's approved it's time to lay down the 50% deposit, as "early season rate offered until April 2016'.

Love your plans!! And your style :)
Made me think about my Nepal volunteering adventure idea in possibly 2 years (study to be ticked off first, and another Japan trip). Meaning 3-6 months off work and rearranging my life. Have the advantage of more years to count before I get to 50, though :p

Life threw me an unexpected curve ball 4 years ago which meant I had the opportunity to do something different.

I was sitting in a rental staring at the ceiling wondering what the hell I was going to do next... An ad came on the radio saying 'last days to get your Perisher Freedom Pass'. I hadn't skied much before, but why not ?

Queue Perisher Freedom pass #1, then a ski trip to Hakuba Japan, then Perisher Freedom pass #2, then a trip to Whistler/Blackcomb, then Perisher Freedom pass #3, then a 2 week trip to 9 x Vail resorts in the USA.

This forum has greatly influenced those choices. I've also been very fortunate to make some great friends along the way!

Reasonable question that should be asked
You say ^^ you've been skiing for about 4 years, starting in your mid 40's.

Are you good enough to get value out of an Alaska Heli trip? You don't want to be "that guy".

It's a fair enough question. I did put in my initial email to them:

I have only been skiing for 3 years and I'm up to the point where I can ski single black diamond bowls quite comfortably. I'm willing to try the occasional double black diamond run, but honestly they are beyond my current skill level.
    To which they replied:

Thanks so much for the detailed information on your ability (it's great BTW :) Honestly, even though you have been only skiing for a few years, the biggest question is: Do you feel comfortable "off piste" and in the powder"? If so, then yes, Alaska has terrain for everyone! Our groups are 4 guests plus a guide, so if you have 3 buddies of the same ability, this is even better. Lot's to go over so we will follow up with a phone call to make sure your questions have been answered!
Will certainly do the phone call before laying down the deposit.

If we can get $118,000US together, we'll get the boat with the helipad and chopper for a week. That would open it up to 8 peeps :D

The key will be the group you end up with. I found many of the people that head to Alaska for heli are pretty hard core and want to do steep, deep, fast and plenty of it. You want to be comfortable skiing in various types of offpiste conditions and be in good condition. I had done a fair bit beforehand but still struggled with the pace at times. So important to be honest with the self evaluation. When I went with CPG years ago there was a family group doing a private charter not because they wanted to do more, but because they wanted to go at their own slower pace.

I'd recommend heading to NZ this winter and try a day or two of heli there to get a feel of it, where it is far more relaxed and you don't need to commit far in advance.

edit. Alaska will still be a step up from what you will likely get in NZ, but at least you won't be doing the equivalent of going from grade cricket into a Test match.

    Very sound advice.

Also a very good excuse for more trips in the interim.

If you haven't done any heli before it's worth doing in advance of a dream trip just to identify areas of concern that you may not have considered.

For me it highlighted my discomfort with provided gear (being unfamiliar with it in an emergency did not sit well with me - so I bought my own).

It also highlighted that girls are at a distinct disadvantage with regards to on mountain ablution - so I bought a she-wee so I don't have to spend the day dehydrated and thirsty. Won't be an issue for you guys (the world is your toilet!), but it sure was for me!

I'm an Engineer. My life is governed by numbers and formulas, empirical results backing up theoretical calculations, researched reports, schedules, deadlines, budgets, graphs, expert advice from professionals, staff to run around to do what I want.

And sometimes I just go and do my own thing.

I'm going. The wiser more experienced ones here may well be right, but I'm going none the less.

Well I have over twelve months to prepare.

I'm fortunate to regularly ski with one of the best off-piste skiers at Perisher. If he's not the best, he certainly does the most in the season. He's not a forum member, but anyone who skis Mt Perisher enough would know who I'm talking about (the go hard or go home one).

I'm also fortunate to live in Canberra. Lots of places to swim, cycle and walk. Training starts in 2 weeks :)
