Hey guys. I've done some driving in snow and I've had no real dramas, but that has been in a small hatchback on chains and various four-wheel-drives. I've recently purchased a late 90s Hiace that is empty (ie very light over the driven rear wheels) that I'm currently converting into a camper. For now, it isn't laden with a pine bed and cabinetry, or anything heavy, so I ask: how dodgy is this going to be in the snow? Any wise old vanlifers with some advice?

I must say, even on wet bitumin it is a little squirrelly. I'm not at all worried about most alpine roads, but I'm all about Hotham, and that road still gives me the woolies.

What he said^^^^ get some weight over the wheels (ie: 200kg or more). Really essential, and if you run into strife near CRB etc you will be wishing you had the extra weight as you slide back down the hill and through the rail, chains or not.

Empty van on snow and ice !!:eek::eek:

An empty van can be dangerous to drive on a wet road, I'd hate to try to drive one on snow and ice.

If you must, my advice would be add about 200kg++ in the back and make sure you have a good set of tyres on her.

Or reverse all the way up.

No hang on. I dont think a rear engined front wheel drive would work either LOL

Thanks all! Good tips. Fair to say, I won't be attempting CRB hill this Thursday. Anyone wanna give me a lift up Hotham Friday morning? I'll probably be bogged at Smoko :D
