    Hi all,
Has any one flown into Cranbrook Airport. We are looking at skiing Fernie, and we can either fly into Calgary then a 3.5 hour drive, but I would prefer to fly to Cranbrook and a 1.5 hour drive. The flight to Cranbrook is a Dash 8 plane and I am not sure how often the airport closes due to weather so are we safer doing Calgary?
    Thanks for any info.

I flew out of Cranbrook a few years ago. It has a bit of a reputation for unreliability, like any small airport in the mountains.

My memory (being 17 years ago) was that it is like Cooma airport. Not sure about reliability.

Only found out about Cranbrook airport after I arrived in Fernie and a few of the locals I was chatting to recommended it. Sorry no info on reliability though.

About sums it up. The valley is reasonably wide there but nonetheless things can quickly go sideways in bad weather. Small aircraft mean there is the possibility of your ski or board bags being left behind if the flight is full. They'll arrive on a later flight.

Thanks for the info, pretty much what I thought.

Have flown into Cranbrook before and also done the drive to Fernie from Calgary, pot luck really with weather.

Have flown in and out of Cranbrook a few times, much better than say Castlegar for reliability, but not as good as some other regional airports.

That West Kootenay airport isn't referred to as 'Cancelgar' for no reason!

Did they divert you or cancel? I was lucky flying into Castlegar, beautiful still sunny day.

Cancel, got on a flight in to Cranbrook one time (hired a car to get to Whitewater), and leaving had to fly out of Kelowna (hired a car to get there).

Sorry for dragging this thread even further off topic, but here is an interesting article about Castlegar airport's difficulties.

Air Canada used to do a run across southern BC, Vancouver-Penticton-Castlegar-Calgary and return by same routing. We were all happy when they scrapped that and went to a Vancouver-Penticton-Vancouver routing. Weather problems in Castlegar and need to have aircraft available in Calgary or Vancouver caused many cancellations over the years. AC's delay/cancellation performance in and out of Penticton improved dramatically once they remove the Castlegar effect.

I've flown in and out of Cranbrook a few times and never had an issue with either baggage or weather. Luck of the draw.
