    Hey guys,
Was wondering if I could get your opinion about what would be a better time to go to Mt Buller.

The dates I'm thinking of going are either
    20th-23rd July
    or
    24th-27th of August

When do you guys think will be better to go?

    Thanks in advance!!

When do you have to make your decision by?

Reason I say this is that you've picked times either side of when the season usually 'peaks' - it's less important in a good season, but after this kind of lean start I like to play the probabilities.

Gut feeling is the August dates would be more safe, but if you can put off your decision by about a fortnight it would make things a lot easier.

A lot can change in 2 weeks - if it dumps in the meantime i'd choose July (bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush) otherwise i'd choose August.

I think the sooner the better to make the decision. But I can prolly hold off for a bit. Was thinking that August would be the safe bet. As long as the place I'm looking at booking accomodation stays available.

But yeah I'd like to be able to have a nice base of snow to be ready when I arrive. Don't wanna go rock Skiing. [IMG]

24-27 Aug: Just before/start of the Interschools comp. Can get very busy, particularly on LBS and Summit.

Should keep that in mind when making your decision.

10cm of end of season pack snow is pretty ridable...
10cm of start of season fresh is not usually good for laying your edge into.

if you can't go the middle (peak) and are too worried if there will be snow early, you should go later in the season.

August is the safer bet in a late season.

Yeah, was thinking of booking later. But the place I was looking at staying is now booked for the end of August. [IMG]

Anyone know where would be the best place to look for accomodation that would be between like 75-90 dollars a night for a Sun-Wed stay?

Yep I wouldn't book ahead ever in an Australian resort, my job allows days off whenever so I have that luxury that some people don't. I really do feel sorry for the people at Vic ski resorts at the moment [IMG] Things will improve a little next week but I don't see more than 10/15cms at most from the system on Mon/Tue

As for Hawaii, since you asked nicely, you cannot compare the crappy Gold Coast to beautiful Hawaii. Already planning another return visit [IMG]

Back to the topic best time to go generally is late August/Early September

Do I need to be a member of Melbourne Uni sports to be able to book there?
What are the rates, it didn't really have much on their website.

    Cheers for the help guys.

I must have missing that page, I'm thinking of booking about the 10-13th of August. They had a large amount of beds still available then.

I didn't see mention of a drying room though. I'd assume they have one.

Those are better dates - if there isn't good snow around then the season will likely be a write-off anyway & it's doubtful you would have had good cover whenever.

Heheh, you guys are lucky that they only have 2 beds available on the Tuesday or otherwise I'd book then. [IMG]

Do you think there will be good cover mid August and how long should I hold off until booking?

I'm guessing that booking late July would be ok and would be able to get a fair idea if its gonna be good conditions for Skiing.

I reckon it's much of a muchness really. You might score late July and you might score mid August. I'd probably opt for mid August if I had to make a choice though I concur with other people on here who would never book in Oz cause it's too hit and miss. From late July to early August you're most likely to get the best conditions so you're gunna be around that time period, now it's up to the snow gods. That's it, there will be no more truth from me again.
