Sadly, not at all (at least the comments about the segment). The NPWS bloke they got for balance looked a bit shell shocked, as though they caught him unawares. He looked as though he was surprised that any serious news organisation had taken the nutters seriously.

    "the nutters" .....

It's a funny old world, ABC "reports" an opinion, much of which is valid and the bbq turns feral. Some of you sound like free range brumby advocates

There's caring for the environment and then there's wanting to shut down a multi-million dollar business that helps a regional economy survive (not to mention generates huge amounts of income for NPWS as well). Colong wants the latter. I can't respect that

    Isn't it three options:
    1 shut it down
    2 as is
    3 develop

WRT to 3, if the Vail led development led to better environmental outcomes they should talk to the 'nutters' about it (as I said on page 1, stakeholder management)

Colong just wants option 1 from the menu please and thank you. Always have. They were fairly vocal around the time of the Perisher master plan release as well

The Colong Foundation are, and always have been, extremists. I'm not sure that they advocate monkey wrenching, but they go close. A terrestrial version of the Sea Shepherds.

Yes, their intention is blatantly obvious when they start stating that there won't be any snow in 50 years time. In the meantime the facilities will just crumble and it will become more and more shit I guess? It comes from a place of thinking that business and the natural environment just don't belong together. That view is about as antiquated as some of the facilities IMHO. We're smart enough to do it well these days, but groups like that don't seem to be willing to credit anyone but themselves with any intelligence.

Think about it Ducky- If road access is shut down and the Tube is the only means of public access, PB could do to other business in the Valley what Telstra do to other telco's who need to use their infrastructure- overcharge to buggery while being able to give their own business bundling advantages. It's bloody easy to do once you own a monopoly.

Skitube as it is couldn't handle the increased traffic. They'd have to get new trains, lay new tracks etc

I dont see the carpark as ugly. Maybe ugly if you park there but on the way to or back from Charlottes you barely notice it.

Carpark is perfectly as ugly as the Perisher village and Skitube.

They do an amazing job of keeping all their infrastructure as an eyesore with bare minimum maintenance.

The real question is why Keith Muir only attacks Perisher.

ABC need to explain Keith's constant agenda to attack Perisher and no one else.

Maybe an expose of Colong donors might lead to the truth.

First you have to "own" the monopoly. PB is a mix of leases with NPWS, RMS over view. The hypothetical scenario is feasible but the on ground reality rather more complex.

  22.

If you close the road (and that was the original plan) the only way in is the Toob.

The "monopoly" I'm referring to is the SkiTube if road access was closed as per the original proposal and comments in this thread. If Perisher owned accommodation was cross subsidised by Tube tickets then they'd have a commercial advantage over all other accommodation. It's a basic accounting trick.

How amazing would it be if the Skitube ran from Jindabyne to Perisher and through to Charlotte Pass. And cost $15.

If Charlotte Pass crowd think the oversnow tractor is cool, how cool would the OVERSNOW SKI TRAIN be....

There was no "original proposal" to close the PB road. There was no proposal to extend the tube to "The Station". There is no "monopoly". The tube does not have the capacity for effective "monopoly". Its a lesser Gonergrat.

    Wonderful speculations are wonderful.

Over a beer I could elaborate on the various proposals of the early 80s than formed the current PB/Skitube. Until then .... carry on.

    Wikipedia, FWIW, agrees.

  28.

Not a proposal as such, part of early project scoping. There where also other proposals from other parties in the mix, proposals that included increased parking at what where separate operations at the time. Certainly there was emphasis from the NPWS on not increasing road traffic and consolidation of operations and the Skitube won out. Consolidation of resorts followed from there. The sum of current operations include parts of multiple proposals. The road was never proposed to be closed as a definitive condition of any proposal. The current carpark remains a legacy of all that came before. Any changes to the current carpark would be subject to current environmental standards.

  29.

So there was a proposal to close the road.

In the same league as the any one of the numerous Twin Valleys, Guthega Village, Tate Ridge, Ridge Chair carpark, Link Road upgrade "proposals" etc

Many "proposals" by many people, including the Colong who propose a return to a natural state and are labelled "nutters".

The term in context was "original plan" ....

  31.
    Legs Akimbo

Legs Akimbo Part of the Furniture Season Pass Gold

Yep. There was a proposal to close the road in the original plan. It didn't make the final plan.

    Next question!!

  32.
    climberman

climberman CloudRide1000 Legend Season Pass Gold

If you were working in it you'd probably think of it as an option or a possibility. A proposal tends to be something that is closer to finalised and gets to an approval stage or similar. Whole suite of options for major infrastructure occur before a proposal is put forward. But anyway, what would people involved in infrastructure know?

  33.
    dawooduck

dawooduck Pool Room Season Pass Gold

I was replying in the context of a future “monopoly” occurring based on a road closure forcing everyone onto the tube but, historically ….. if one was to state ….. the “SkiTube proposal documentation” included an option to restrict Kosciusko road access to essential services, worker and business traffic, then one would be correct.

First-hand knowledge …… carry on

Would have been easier then, before the roads became RTA/RMS.

  36.
    dawooduck

dawooduck Pool Room Season Pass Gold

Pffftttt …. more semantics, which did of course play a very big part in all of the “proposals” of the day, the NPWS controlled road.

The issue I have with the very firm words “a proposal” is that they get used to present a subsequent hypothetical as feasible or of merit (as referenced to CW monopoly proposition) ….. which is poignant in this thread of screaming declarations for the destruction of the whole ABC and anyone that happens to prefer Burramys parvus over granite faced day facilities.

The road closure option was never, ever going to fly, stake holders other than Perisher that use the road and would need a lot of convincing the train would cope with the load, be available and be affordable. Charlotte Pass, Ski Rider and Sponars for example.

Charlottes Pass overnight stays generally park at Bullocks and tube it. Ski Rider and Sponars have on site parking.

They had an excellent expansion proposal but SKiTube had the "biggest" solution to the NPWS traffic access angst. Most of this that came before has been well and truly superseded by government "thinking" in regards to the KNP. One could say that the early 80s the "vibe" changed from preservation to development. The Snowies are now a major tourism NSW area of focus and the NPWS appear, in regards to the KNP to have become more about managing outcomes for incomes.

    Of interest perhaps ....

Guthega Development Pty Ltd v Minister Administering the National Parks & Wildlife Act 1974 (NSW) & Ors (1986) 7 NSWLR 353

The PB development is just part of the relentless march of mankind. I hope they do an awesome job of it.

    Summer visits to CP?

And how would you get to the car parks at Sponars and Ski Rider without the road?

The proposal was only for winter closures, like the Summit Rd beyond Perisher. I am not even sure where the closure would have happened - if it was beyond Sponars the effect on anything but PB and Smiggins would be minimal.

the email headline "Shark Attack victim waits hours for rescue chopper" which was also the chaser on ABC news 24
    Some of the details -
    he was diving in a remote area of the Torres Strait - closer to PNG than Australia;
    the first rescue attempt by helicopter was called of by bad weather;

Yep the ABC is definitely unemotional and balanced
