Heads up!!
Not so much Yarra Glen to Yea - but my company has just won a job to lay a watermain down Macintyre Lane / Victoria Rd - starting very soon, which will result in some roadworks / night works / temporary stop & go lights.
This will make the Melba Hwy route even less appealing for trip to Buller in 2009.

No big deal Going through Lillydale isn't that bad going up to the turn off at Melba's house. The works on Melba highway have no alternative however, they are the main hassle. Thanks for the headup and Vic Rd route.

I do the Hume because I leave from Tullamarine on a Friday arvo, but even now from home I'd still go up that way.

I live in Armadale too and I value being able to exit the city via the freeway far higher than the 20km shorter Yarra Glen route.
Thanks for that fellow armadale resident. Nice suburb hey? we are a minutes walk from Malvern Central.

So how much time is being added going that way (ie - via Yarra Glen to Yea)? What way would you recommend going from Hawthorn?
Looking at Google maps, it looks like cutting up through Carlton and then onto Sydney Road, then the Western Ring Road and then the Hume Hwy would be the way to go. Does anyone know of a more direct route than that?

nice area to retire to
im probably on the borderline of hume vs yarra glen where i am. whats kept me from sampling the hume is that im invariably on the road very early or after the traffic, so even with the current road issues its usually fuss free

Like anything it depends on the time of day.
My brother lives in Hawthorn and swears by getting on to the Eastern at Burke Rd then Eastlink to Ringwood and up through Yarra Glen, however he hasn't gone up since the roadworks went up to a new level.
The way you are suggesting would be suicide on a Friday afternoon, Carlton any afternoon is a nightmare

From Canterbury I cut through Balwyn to get on the Eastern at Doncaster Rd, then as per CM. The works have simply added back the 15 mins that Eastlink / Ringwood bypass took off last year. Too many traffic lights to bother heading out the Whittlesea. It really ends up being exactly the same. If you live Ivanhoe or north then it's quicker that way.
Hawthorn / Canterbury / Kew to Mt. Buller - 3 hours, speed limit all the way.

We'll be leaving early on Friday morning (4:30am) so traffic won't be an issue. Just want to avoid the roadworks.

True - For me (Mont Albert) it doesn't matter which route I take of the 4 or 5 I have tried, they are all so close to the same time it's impossible to say one is quicker than the other.
If I leave Horse Hill @ 5pm on the dot - invariably I am home within 5 minutes either side of 8pm..... unless the weather is treacherous....

So if the roadworks are adding 20 minutes to the drive, then the Hume must be the quicker option.

Spot on.... Hume is the go for 2009 for me.
Though in future with a clear run, I do prefer the Melba Hwy route as it's not so boring!!

From Hawthorn, the Hume is 36 km further according to Google, so that equates to about 20mins extra driving, probably line ball.
The further east you live the more sense Yarra Glen makes I suppose.

You can average 110 km/h on the Hume past Craigieburn though...
I find the estimated times displayed on Google maps to be wayyyyy out... My Navman is usually pretty close to spot on though.

Yes I never look at Google for the times, just distances. 33km = 20mins @ 100km/h

like LTB ive found the roadworks have simply eaten into the eastlink advantage somewhat
given that, and the fact im always on the road out of peak times, yarra glen it is - as above far less boring too!

Just another question. I haven't been on the Hume for years. Are there signs for the Mt Buller (or Yeah) exit? Or should we looking out for a specific exit name?

I turn off at Broadford and go through Strath Ck. Road is narrow but about 7km shorter than Tallarook.

From Lilydale, then Coldstream, Healveille, Black Spur, Buxton, Alexandra, Yark, etc adds 10kms to me. The drive is very pleasant, unless you get stuck behind a boat or caravan.,

another trip, another lot of bad drivers, one who could clearly not see well once they turned off the high beam, which they eventually did each time a car came from the other direction, BTW the 200 meter high beam rule needs to be updated, 200 meters is way too short. He then slowed to ~80km/hr odd. That was fun to be behind.
Then there was another idiot passing the cars stuck behind a bus coming down the mountain, not sure why he thinks speeding passed cars one by one was going to get him anywhere, there was no way he was going to get passed the bus before the bottom. He had a couple of kids in the back too, a black range rover, reg '81', must be his IQ.
