iGlenn, where abouts was this overtaking lane you are talking about?
The long slight uphill one just after Merton (heading back towards Melbourne).
Some people are so stupid. Idiots trying to overtake one car so they can be number 245 in the procession. Nevermind there is no gap for them to pull into.
Like Ben, I would hate to be heading in the opposite direction of the traffic as you would be in constant fear of someone idiot being on the wrong side of the road at the wrong time.

I drove back from Buller last night from about 5:30pm. From Just outside Mansfield watched in horror as a complete d*ckhead in a white Mazda 626 attempted to overtake from several cars back just before a corner over double white lines. He drew level and then bailed at the last second, hit the brakes and forced his way back in right behind me. A couple of minutes later he successfully went past me, again over double white lines right before a blind rise. I then watched him overtake sever more cars in a similar fashion.
He must have stopped in Yea, because he ended up behind me again somehow. After Yarra Glen, he again overtook on double white lines leading towards a blind rise and corner.
Each of these manourvres obviously scared the bejesus out of the cars around me, and he was tooted and flashed each time. This was not enthusiastic driving. It was russian routlette pure and simple. The guy had absolutely no way of know what was coming in the other direction. And of course being Sunday night, his net gain was to move from position 726 to 705 in the same long queue, and there was plent of oncoming traffic. I eventually caught him again in Melbourne on the Maroondah highway, so it didn't even get him home any sooner.
I have seen a lot of bad driving on that road, but so many separate bad decisions from the same person was just astounding. I am amazed he didn't get himself and several other people killed in the process. Scary stuff.

yeah, I must have been about 4 cars behind you guys, he over took me just past Yea, with the long line of traffic he wasn't going anywhere. Later he made some other stupid moves.
I watched him over take the 3 or 4 cars over double lines in the 80km zone on the hill with the sharp'ish bend and the top, I think all 3 or 4 cars flashed him, had a car come around the bend it was going to be all over, he had nowhere to go.
Its just unreal what goes on... I wish I wrote down his rego.

The wife said it was 3 cars, that he over took on that hill, he must of been the 4th car I recalled. We also caught up with him near Mooroolbark, he turned left at Croydon road I think. His windows were tinted dark, so you couldn't see the driver, I would be hiding too if I drove like that.

A helicopter would solve the problem as well.

Is there a true happy medium ( Black XT Forrester too! ). Tracked back to the Hume behind a bloke who went from 30km/h to 80 km/h. Had to blast him and the two behind him because of a high level of indecision all the way to Tallarook.

Local knowledge is handy on the Tallarook road. Most of it can be taken easily at 100 km/h but there is a section close to the Goulbourn Valley Highway which requires 4th gear and 80 km/h on a few sections.
Heading to Yea, you always have to watch for the blind right hander over the crest. Luckily the guard rail on your right serves as a good reminder.

I pull over if someone is sitting behind me for long enough and there is no chance to overtake me.
However, if they sit too close I will not pull over

Need to open Skidowns School of Ski-Driving. Maybe a class in the carpark?

Found a new thing to b|tch about last night - drivers not using their high beams.
Last night was really dark due to no much moon, and we got caught behind a number of drivers going slow with just their low beam.
Makes it difficult to overtake as they're not illuminating the road ahead, and honestly if I were driving with my low beams and seeing so little, i'd be going that slow too.

Almost as annoying as people who dont turn their's off when you overtake them.
To be quite honest, the forester doesnt have the greatest lights, even the high beam ones. When i upgraded the old man's to some of the whiter, brighter ones i noticed a huge difference when driving at night out on the country.

mate i had a good rant about this on the way home myself....ridiculous
the other problem i have is uphill overtaking lanes. the turbodiesel aint an overtaking monster, and these kill me. i had been giving one bloke the 'indication' that i wanted to overtake for a while, but then we hit an uphill OT lane....sigh
instead of flagging me by he sped up...*shakes fist*

Can't agree with you there - I love them.
I don't drive fast but I like to average the speed limit - including up hills and around corners that don't have lots of yellow signs on them. There are lots of cars that cane it on the flat but really hold you up in the hills, uphill overtaking lanes really sorts them out.
I went on a road trip years ago on the Princes Hwy from near Eden to Sydney - almost all the OT lanes were up big hills, it was awesome.

Nothing worse than someone who sits on 90km/h around the bends where you can do 100km/h, then speeds up to 105-110km/h on the overtaking lanes and straight stretches.
HID's are great, not so good for the people coming in the opposite direction though
