Don't get me started on this pipeline....... absolutely stupid....it should never have been built, the consultants doing the 'maths' should be sacked....

Anyway...I live in the southern part of Melbourne used to go via Yarra Glen..do many think Hume Hwy is now quicker with all the 80kph speed limits etc along the Melba? ..

Edit: I didn't read this thread too well...I am going to be going via the Hume \:\)

Hume is the go. At least less corners via Tallarook that make this +1 carsicky!!! Those reverse camber 90deg righthand down-hills out the back of Toolangi get even the Subie sometimes.

Yep, you have to watch out for the Tallarook-Toolangi road once you see the guardrail..that blind right hander over the crest really needs better signposting.

To those who don't use the Hume Hwy but are thinking of using it to get to Buller this season,
just remember all the point to point cash registers from Craigieburn to around Seymour.

Exactly, it's in the state budget to catch you.

Good thing is that they are pretty obvious.

Problem is that they are point to point. So even if you go past each camera under the speed limit, it is your average speed between the 2 points that determines if you are fined or not.

l find that alot of people are too scared to go 2 or 3 km's over the limit to overtake, so they sit in the right hand lane, frustrating all the driver's banked up behind them.

Are they overheads like the ones further up the Hume in NSW?
I thought they were only used for heavy vehicles??

No, they are generally on poles on side of road, quite easy to spot.
Unfortunately when you have a government that is hooked on revenue from cameras,
l'm sure they would fine a kangaroo stuck in the bull bar of a speeding truck if they could.

The Hume Hwy is a good run to Buller, just be aware of the posted speed limits between
Craigieburn and around Seymour and you shouldn't have any probs. ;\)

Returning from Buller today, it was bumper to bumper gutter crawling from Yarrawood???Winery into Yarra Glen. And I was busting. Any reason, or just long weekend traffic?????

That's pretty normal. I only head through Yarra Glen if I am travelling at an obscure time (and leaving from the right part of Melbourne)

Good old plenty rd route was great for me today! A bit of traffic coming down from kinglake and through whittlesea but that is expected considering how heavy the rain was! IMO its all in the timing for any route to Buller.

Robbied mate- Lilydale ->Healesville -> Mansfield and then you should have some traffic to follow. I leave Preston at 530 pick up the boys from Christmas Hills and am at Buller for first lifts. Sleep in and even on a weekday the traffic builds quickly and punishes even the most patient.

The blocked off overtaking lanes are dangerous at night. From a distance on a bend at night, the middle lane 'looks' like the left lane is blocked. A car up ahead, unfamiliar with the road, ended up in the wrong side of the road. @ kms later, he was just lucky no one was conming head on. Someone should be charged with stupiditry, Mr Brumby

Came back tonight this way, wasn't too bad. Lots of drivers wanting to sit on 90km/h in the hundred zones much to the frustration of everyone else.

Tell me though, how does a cop with a radar gun positioned at the end of an overtaking lane have anything to do with road safety and not just blatant revenue raising? Judging by what i saw, they should meet their quota this month easily.

If I ever got 'busted' by overtaking in an overtaking lane I'd contest it in court.

i have a bit of an experience to share from friday

i was driving to buller and at this stage i, there is massive truck and another commodore behind a slower truck doing about 50km/h up a hill, fair enough, gets to the flat section continues to do 50km./h for about 5 minutes, by this time he had a convoy behind him of about 8 cars and the truck. mostly utes and work vehicles, one of the guys behind me , licence plate "pyro" decides to overtake me on the wrong side of the road just to gain an extra [auto-censor] spot infront but still had 2 trucks and a car infront of him.

then some other idiot right at the back overtook the whole set of about 8 cars and 2 trucks on a blind bloody corner, could have easily caused a head on.

so then this truck who had been doing 50km/h on the flat in a 100 zone speeds it up to 95. overtaking lane coming up, the first car successfully overtakes him, the next truck tries to overtake him and then both trucks start swerving and the original truck who went 50km/h starts tooting, speeding up and going mental.

next overtaking lane comes up, im about to overtake this truck who was now doing 70km/h in a 100 zone. I start overtaking the truck and im about level with his middle, he starts speeding up and by this stage im doing about 105 and im committed to overtake him because there are cars up my [auto-censor] also about halfway up the truck also wanting to overtake. he starts merging into me (this is at night btw so he can clearly see my lights in his mirror and i wasnt in his blindspot) and then starts tooting and swerving.

all this happened at around 5.30 am on a country road, ive seen kids on farms drive better than some of these people, i was fearing for my life with the amount of risks people taking overtaking on blind corners, and the crazy trucks. Id be more scared though for the people coming the other way, id shite myself if i was going around a corner and saw lights on my side of the road, let alone a truck swerving into my lane

I also saw some stupid overtaking moves on Friday night. One idiot tried to overtake, underestimated how much time they had before the top of a hill and has to plant their foot on the brakes and cut in hard to avoid going over the top of the hill in the wrong lane.

Perhaps I am just noticing these moves this year because I am in a cruiser this year so can see the stupidity in front of me.
