Whole ski lift stolen in Desná

ČTK | 9 MAY 2012. Desna, North Bohemia, May 7 (CTK) -

An unknown thief stole a whole ski lift on a meadow in Desna in April, local police spokeswoman Ludmila Knopova told CTK Monday.

The police are investigating this unusual crime.

The perpetrator took steel supporting structures, three posts with a pulley and a one-kilometre-long wire rope.

The total damage has been put at 200,000 crowns, Knopova said.

Policemen are trying to find out whether the thief has sold parts of the ski lift at some salvage point or whether he plans to operate the ski lift elsewhere.

If found guilty, the perpetrator faces up to five years in prison for a theft.

It was probably similar to those toy lifts they used to have at Buffalo.

At night? Non-residential resort, I presume. Snow's now melted - no one there? Or a privately owned lift?
Off to Lake Mountain? Mystic Mountains Ski Hire

Well the Czech rep isn't really known for it's ski resorts (Slovakia & Poland yes, Czech no). It wouldn't be high either so snow would have long gone, so not many around. Then they were only talking about 3 posts and pully as well as the rope. Also even lifts that run in summer (chairs, gondolas) often close around May for maintenance, so stuff being dismantled may have been ignored.

Still some feat though..

Not true ( I was born there ). Hundreds of small resorts all over the country. Not big, not much of altitude, but skiing, yes. Although Krkonose are well known for good skiing. They skied in Jeseniky ( North Moravia ) in May. I skied to my school \:\)

Well OK, not well known outside of the Czech Rep.
Also when I visited the Tatras a few years ago in April there was no snow and everything was pretty much shut down.

Yes, it is variable, this year was ( apparently ) very good. Lots of Germans are skiing in Krkonose ( Northern Bohemia ). Czechs are not very good in advertising themselves. It's like heaps of small club fields you could say. Skiing is great in surrounding Austria and Switzerland, 8 hrs drive, so obviously they don't bother much with small czech slopes

They need all the lifts they can get after stealing so many punters from Buller.
