2022 - Seriously.... \:\(

http://unofficialnetworks.com/squawalpin...caldwell-95587/

We also spoke of how long it would take for Squaw and Alpine to be legitimately connected via ski lifts. Realistic permitting processes and construction had us looking a completion date somewhere around 2022.

Hmmm 2022

Long time away but I think I'd be keen to book an epic Sunnyside crib the moment a successful Olympic bid is announced!

ok an attempt to get back to plans etc rather than skidown's adventures in hot tubs with companions: Trying to balance timing with MrsH, Fastman etc and the Chicago ski club, plus wanting to revisit the PNW reminded me of MrsH's counsel last February that as a geriatric two shorter trips are better than one longer one so I might look at two weeks late Jan to early Feb and another two weeks from after President's Day weekend into March. I figure that will also spread the risk of hitting a bad patch of weather conditions,

Plan A:

Grand Targhee Friday 1st Feb - Tuesday 5th Feb.
Big Sky Wednesday 6th Feb - Thursday 14th Feb.

Plan B: Wherever it is at if the above is not looking so flash.

McNads is heading stateside for the first time!! Amusingly enough, people have asked "Are you going to see this and that?" i.e. Grand Canyon, Vegas, blah blah blah. Dude, I'm going there to board, I'm coming home, that is all.

IMO you will sell yourself short then. The US is the best country for a road trip. Two years ago on a three week trip managed to do a big chunk of Pacific Highway 1 north and south of San Francisco, San Simeon and Yosemite and still had time for some very decent skiing around Tahoe and Jackson Hole.

Yes I'm warming to a split trip. A mate from Tacoma suggested some skiing at Crystal, another couple of days at White Pass and they are having a weekender built near Bend where I could stay with them for a week, that would be late Feb into the first half of March I guess.

Locked and loaded.

Booked flights into LA a while back and quizzed everyone about a 2.25 hr lay over /connection to bc.

Now booked it through to Kelowna. 8 days BC then Vegas for New Year. Will follow up with a 4 week road trip that will include Death Valley, Mammoth, Heavely/Tahoe, San Fran, LA, Tiguana and San Diego.

Sunnyside or Alpine Meadows for the Olympics?
You're not an expert because you're too worried about stuffing up instead of trying to show off.

Good arguments either way really. Alpine would be closer to the events, but Sunnyside is more central to town/other resorts, you've got the TART, and it's not isolated like Alpine is as night.

I skiied at Heavenly, Kirkwood, and Squaw this year and although the snow wasnt great I certainly got the impression that on a good day Kirkwood would be the most epic. Only did 1 day at Squaw and the only impression I got from it was that it is really big. Spent most of my time at Heavenly (due to proximity) and had some really good tree skiing powder days. Spent several days at Kirkwood and it certainly seemed to have the most potential to be epic on a powder day (which unfortunately I did not get to experience).

Squaw & Alpine are both great, Heavenly sucks (unless Motts is open) and Kirkwood is the pick of the Tahoe resorts. Only downside to Kirkwood is it is out the way (hour drive from Minden / South Lake) and the limited accomodation there is expensive.
Put fingers in ears, say "tra la la la la la la" and everything will be okay.

That can be a benefit as it doesn't get the weekend crowds being on the southern back road, 88. Most traffic from San Fran goes North via Truckee as the road is a lot better. Only those coming from the south in good weather go via 88 to Tahoe area.

Kirkwood has similar steep terrain like Squaw but is smaller and also has a lot less people.

Yes Heavenly was average on the day I spent there this year, Motts was closed and well 1/2 the mountain was closed due to lack of snow... The groomers were and are average...

You want groomers you go to Northstar, seriously they are EPIC there

Kirkwood - Yes the accomodation is $$$$$$$ so we are looking at staying at South Lake/Heavenly area...... But then the 1hr + drive is a PITA and worse if it's a snow day, which is why/when you want to be in Kirkwood anyway.

Kirkwood is my favourite Tahoe resord, but Alpine Meadows is also a top destination. Mind you, Squaw mid week in snow storm is hard to beat.
