P A is on the money with the demographics...if a bit of a generalisation. I'm 55 and no way am I going to listen to Mangy Bendytoy. I would rather hear Lincoln Park or Nine inch nails in the half pipe.

I like the music generally UNLESS, and this applies to about 50% of the music played on lifts, the speakers are shite! Tinny music much worse than none.

When I was young I hated oldies who complained about music in/at venues. Good DJ'ing (ie selection matched to audience and venue) combined with high quality PA gear that is set up right makes a place hum and lifts it out of the ordinary - and the best people to get this right across a broad demographic are experienced DJ's usually around 25-28 yo.

I'm 47 now - and I still hate oldies who complain, I especially hate peers who complain cause I know they liked their music fresh and loud just like I did 25 years ago (still do).

But the biggest crime is committed by aged and out-of-touch (musically) management who allow music but then prescribe what it should be and how loud it should be - thus compromising integrity entirely and you end up with shit wedding DJ's that still play the fcuking Big Chill soundtrack.

It's so compromised that no one really enjoys it - and because it's assumed the music was safe and middle of the road enough - management then concludes that no music is best and thus the door is shut to improving atmosphere through sound and mediocrity is assured.

All ski resorts need somewhere where fresh tunes are pumping - it should not be an afterthought or a tack-on, it should be designed in so it works right. Ski resorts are in the entertainment business and music is an essential ingredient.

This is not to say it should be blaring across the whole resort and on every lift - you create separate spaces or 'Rooms' - just like a good night club.

I would abandon any resort playing that and commence a law suite for ear damage of course demanding an immediate ticket cost refund.

Your honour, I rest my case.

Play no music and people who want it will gripe about it and bring their own. Put music on and a sizeable group will hate whatever you choose, some badly enough to take their business elsewhere.

As a resort owner, why would you?

No music is no solution - this kind of thinking is just growing old and blanketing ideas with the anesthetised sentiment of ageing Boomers and X-ers - all you end up with is a ski resort that is like Triple M - mediocre and on a long slow boil to ratings death.

Back when I were a lad working at Buller the ticket office played Austrian Oom pah pah music all day on Bk St.
When I was working Bk St if Mad Marge was out I used to get the gals to put on a tape I had, it was a pick of songs of the old 3RRR.
Clapton, Stones etc, slower blues stuff.
Punters loved it and commented often.
But soon as Mad Marge got back the tape went off and it was back to Oom pah pah and piano accordians.

Only amusing aspect was the French Ski School was playing Austrian music and the Austrians ran the opposing lift co at Orange up the hill and the Austrian Ski School.

On the contrary, I reckon it's the best option. We could argue about it till the cows come home so I posted a poll in convo instead. Without some real stats we won't know what people really think. And of course a poll in convo will give us iron-clad stats LOL but it's better than nothing...

Interesting poll so far.

The most popular options are "nothing at all" (by a mile), 70's-90's rock (ie triple M) and triple J a long way behind, and everything else is about as popular as a flyblown merino at an orgy.

In terms of what people hate, "nothing at all" doesn't bother too many people but everything else bothers enough people to be a worry, given that more than half the respondents would be influenced to go elsewhere if they hated the music at a particular resort.

So I still can't see a reason for a resort to put on music - no matter what they pick they're going to annoy more people than they please.

I am male I cannot do more than one thing well at a time. When I ski piped music is noise, nothing else. When skiing on an uncrowded hill blessed with the good stuff its just perfect the way it is. If I wanted to listen to music I would take my Ipod, or go to the pub.

AC/DC use a song format that has produced way too many songs that all sound the same. Some people can put up with that but those people are musical retards who would be happy to hear the same song 100 times a day, or a few AC/DC albums as there is not much difference.

If AC/DC were a car manufacturer, lets say holden for example this would be a wrap up of their car making history.
1974- HQ kingswood.
1984- HQ kingswood.
1994- HQ kingswood.
2004- HQ kingswood.
2014- HQ kingswood.

See where I am going?
Sorry if you are a massive AC/DC fan. They do have a few good songs and did great things back in the day but they have a hundred or so songs nobody really needs to hear.

To those who I offended please dont throw an empty beer bottle at me from your torana whilst wearing a bintang singlet, footy shorts and thongs.

I remember music being played @ hukuba 47, Goyru & Niseko all being enjoyable. Although I do remember it was really loud @ Hanazono around the park area ,didnt last for long going past + you had hoods on the lifts going past .
Overall I enjoyed the music in japan, I was surprised as its all in english & its all good.

I think the problem surrounds the word "good". What one person percieves as "good" others will be annoyed by, sometimes enough to take their business elsewhere.

If you haven't already, check the poll I posted on this ( here ).

35% of the respondants preferred no music at all with only 3% saying the quiet would turn them off a resort. 19% wanted 80's rock but 8% might go somewhere else because it was played. 17% would like Triple J but 11% might go somewhere else if it was played. There was a smattering of support for some other styles but they were all more of a nett turn-off than a positive.

It's hardly a convincing argument to play music if you're going to put off as many or more customers than you attract.

Falls have "music" (I use the term very loosely) playing on ruined castle chair for the park there. If there are events on, they may have music elsewhere too. I want to torch the speakers and use the wires to strangle whatever idiot thought it was a good idea.On the rare occasions that they play music that I like, I still wish they wouldn't.

If I want music when I'm skiing I can use an ipod.

hahaha - I was just about to comment on how I liked the setup at Falls and enjoyed listening to music when I was in that area! The generation gap I guess.

I also loved the music they played out at RC, but then again I love my hip-hop. I found I couldn't really hear it from the runs on either side.. Just when I was on the chair. Gave us something to sing along to when the chair stalls. I can't use iPods when I'm riding, I just get disoriented because I can't tell if there's anyone behind me.

Well Hakuba & Niseko is hardly is a representative sample of japanese resorts. Just the ones with the most foreigners.
Being english doesn't necessarily mean it's 'all good'.

The local resort where I live in Japan played music on the beginner slope, it seemed to be the same 10 songs all season. Japan (and Korea) seem to only have 10 songs that are popular at a time anyway.

As staff I love if there is music at the lift station. As a customer I don't have, I have headphones.

At Revelstoke we had music at the tube park at night but it was the worst playlist ever, lots of reggee and tripple J hottest 100 random alternative bands, not really family friendly or energetic. I used to point the speaker towards the hotel instead of the tube park where it would give the guests the illusion of a party but I didn't have to hear it.

Not a fan of music on the hill, which I might have mentioned before, but I do remember a sublime time on Scotts, maybe 4 years ago. It was late afternoon, maybe a little before 4pm, the shadows were long after a classic bluebird day, the crowds had gone, and Chet Baker (I think) was playing on the outside speakers at Dicky Knees. Loved it.

ps: Some time later, I asked the guy who then ran the place why they did not play more jazz on the outside speakers. His response... the "Park Crew" complained. C'est la vie!

One of my best memories was at about 3.30pm up at Coronet Peak with some Kiwi dub group playing chilled out tunes (i actually think they were a live group at the beer garden area down the bottom, echoing up the val) - golden sun, mellow vibes. It's always stuck in my mind as a perfect match of music and setting, and everyone was commenting on how awseome it was whether they liked the particular music style or not - it just fit.

+1 for live music. How can a set of speakers and a pop-rock playlist ever compete with that?

I put up a poll in convo when this thread was running hot. In the end, most people wanted no music and the next preferences were 70's/80's rock and triple J. Anything else (at least anything else in my poll) was more likely to drive away more people that it attracted.

Yeah I saw that poll. Voted for Triple J too IIRC. But I don't recall live music being an option?

'Cos if a decently talented group were playing somewhere on the hill, I wouldn't really mind what style of music they played.

When somebody's putting music on, and they ask me what I'd like to hear, then I often like to reply, "something I've never heard before".

For example I don't often like Jazz, but if this were played on the hill on a sunny day then I'd be stoked:

Youtube - Jan Garbarek - In Praise of Dreams

Who here has heard that before? Would anyone like to hear that sort of thing on the hill?

Perhaps if there was a small stage set up on the slopes somewhere where there's lots of people going past, you could have some of Triple J's "Unearthed" entrants playing. Make a small festival of it with a gig in Jindy one night too \:\) Just ideas...
