Ok so to get this thread back on track. I have skied both Niskeo and Hakuba before in February and never had to wait for a chair except at the base gondola on a powder morning but this year was looking to go for a week with the GF over New Years time. Out of interest what are the crowds like around then up in Niseko? This trip won't be too much exploring and thus looking for easiness, I liked that more about Niseko than Hakuba when I went a couple of years ago.

Don't know about New Years crowds but any chance of the unrelated crap from the last page being deleted?

Although if you went just about anywhere other than Niseko or Hakuba at New Years there certainly won't be a crowd.

Around NY will be crowded by Japanese standards TIL - more so I would expect at Hakuba, Niseko, Yuzawa and Shiga Kogen. However if you're looking for something straightforward with the possibility of a party happening on NY eve then I'd say Niseko is the go.

Agree with Heinz and Piggy. I got a bit of a laugh out of all the banter but now it's done it's best wiped.

please wipe.... japan threads are usually the most interesting...such an alien country. Re nye in niseko. Friends that used to live there reckon it was a great time to visit. Didnt get the honshu nye crowd. Chinese new year on the other hand, worse in niseko

I have a while to decide obviously, but it will be somewhere up on Hokkaido I think, just which resort area, and will most likely be Niseko unless someone can convince me that I am missing an awesome experience elsewhere!

Has anyone ever had issues making bookings for a Wed-Wed for 7 nights, rather than what I expect is the standard Sat-Sat?

Never heard of any issues with a Wed-Wed booking - I think that is just an Australian thing which some have exported to Niseko.

The japanese themselves normally only book a few days.

Also consider Furano as an option.

I have done the Xmas/NY Niseko thing -
It's busy first hr or so getting up and away from the village on the gondola or ace quad - after that it's fine - busy is only a 5 min wait anyway - nothing on some Honshu resorts on holiday weekends (or Aust or NZ on weekends)
You'll need to book early (day before sometimes) for popular restaurants as the village is busy.
NY Eve there is usually a flare run, a stage and some local entertainment - if you can stand standing around in the snow when its below minus 10C for a few hours

I think Chinese NY would give it a run for its money crowd-wise
