rode all over st anton today.
thoughts so far...
snow quality is really poor, lots of grass and rocks, icey in the morning, slush in the afternoon.
tons of people everywhere, mostly sitting in the sun drinking (i dunno if this is standard at this time of year)
lift line etiquette as well as lifties actually working seem terrible.

positives i can see are if there was decent snow theres tons of terrain to ride.
thats about it, im not that impressed so far.

heading over to lech tomorrow.

then off-piste tour on tuesday.

WC - out of interest is this your first time in Europe? Will be interesting to see what you think after your time in Japan. Europe is so unbelievably hit or miss... when we were in St Anton March '09 in was like Spring at the start of the week (so beers in the sun at Rendl beach were a great idea!) but then by the end of the week we had about 6 feet in 2 days and the pow was epic.

yeh it was definitely spring today. I've always been wary of europe because of the hit and miss weather, expense and apre culture.
i know its early days, but its pretty much what i expected. lots of stereotypes confirmed \:\)

i think for me nowadays, i just want to shred powder everyday in empty resorts and japans the best place for that. gulmarg was also good, but i hated india.

im still having a good time, dont get me wrong \:\)

rode zurs, zug and lech today.

got a small amount of fresh powder this morning riding from zurs-lech. conditions overall were still pretty rubbish everywhere else, icey and poor vis.

the vastness of this area is pretty mindboggling

i might be realising that i dont actually like alpine riding that much especially when its foggy/snowy because i cant see anything and i had some vertigo today. doesnt seem to be any decent tree riding that i can find to get away from this.

anyway, offpiste guiding tomorrow.

We had those conditions you speak of last year in nozawa for the last 2 days there, and we were there at the same time roughly as you were. I've had the same in Europe but also some great conditions in Europe. Its the luck of the draw pretty much anywhere you go in the world, some times you get it sometimes you don't, even here in Oz.

the thing i like about europe is the bluebird powder days, rare in japan.

overall i like st anton, would i come here again? probably not because i think i can get better value elsewhere eg japan.

Great pics! Don't know if you have been there before to be able to compare but is Rendl busy these days? I was there in 2009 before the built the new gondola and it was super quiet when the rest of the resort was busy. Could get fresh lines off the top chair (which is as high as the valluga) all day!

I was there xmas 08/09 and again 09/10 and I saw bugger all difference in crowds over in Rendl, but that said, there was more snow in 08/09 and so there were less crowds generally the following year because people either went to other resorts or delayed their trip until things improved.

We were in Lech for 9 days in early march. Unreal amount of snow fro base and 6 powder days from 9. It was excellent - one of my very favorite places.

Lots of pics at: http://gortonator.wordpress.com/2012/03/25/posh-people-dont-ski-pow-a-week-at-lech/
