Gotta say.

After the trip to Japan last week i'm really kinda over go pros and their users..
I witnessed so many disgusting scenes of horrible skiing all due to an obsession with filming..

Like FFS why do you have to follow your fourty something mate down a groomer at 47 with a camera on a pole? Youre paying no attention to the fall line, other snow users or your mates. Distraction plus
As well the footage is just as boring as batshit.. the lens fogs..the constant "is the red light on?"

note....epic lines in BC are ok...

Yeah, I made heaps of top notch pov movies with just a cheap cam strapped on, you would hardly need neck muscles for one of those little toys.

And the quality is shit compared to the KwallyT I got out of mine.

"Is it on? Is it on?"

Agreed. My friends had them. Pains in the arses the lot of them. Good for night time shenanigans though.

Actually, when we were at Cortina these was a chick with one attached to the end of a ski pole... that still had the spiky ski pole bit on the end. If the camera was facing foward, that could have been one awesome kebab closeup.

I gotta say I'm over any filming, way too much time standing at the top or the bottom for everyone else to be filmed etc, I froze.

The HD goggle-cam is better....

Turn it on and you can see it's on. Doesn't stick up or out. Most people do't know it's a camera.

My mate had his strapped to his chest for ease of use and didn't get any footage of me the week before last in Niseko.

He just got a white screen.

Must have been something wrong with it.

what he said ^

it applies everywhere, not just skiing, and normal cameras as well. Recently did a trip through the north of England, Scotland and 2 weeks skiing in Italy. Left the camera at home. Best thing i have ever done.

A lot of people spend their holidays looking through a lens or stuffing around with a camera to get "that" shot. Open your eyes! Just buy a couple of postcards and a fridge magnet if you need visual momentos of your trip. They wont bore the beejeesus out of your friends either.

The stuff I'm hoping to ski next week there's no way in creation you'd be able to manage a pole mounted gopro pointing back at you.

Pole mounted gopro is a decent tip that the terrain is lame or they're not going at 100%, so what's the point?

I have a cheap POV cam strapped to my helmet.
mostly just for fun, but also to show my non-sliding +1 how JB looks as she rips away from me on her skis.

If its on, all well and good. If not, no hassle.
we don't change they way we slide just to film - it either works or it doesn't.

but some of the weird things I've seen (and heard of) people doing just to get the right shot make me wonder if they have forgotten the whole point of skiing & boarding in the first place

Happy to admit I got a Contour+ for Chrissy.

We usually have at least a week on snow with a few families and the evenings video reviews are a highlight. A good chance to have a laugh, put sh#t on each other, admire our kids and savour the memories.

Not too many budding directors in our lot and nothing much we would publish on Youtube.

Still a hoot though.

I ski with my family and it is fun to get footage of them learning and making progress, although only of interest to me. If I am skiing terrain I consider hard it is rarely used, but in the arvo skiing groomers with the kids it keeps me interested. Plus I have some great footage of my dad falling over and that kind of stuff is priceless.

People trying to be 'really out there' and make amazing ski footage generally fail IMO, good ski footage needs to be filmed from more than one angle.

So i would say, they are lame if you think you are making some amazing vid for distribution, but otherwise its a good way to hold off the SDS between trips.

So true. After a tough day I find myself looking back over our family footage. Never fails to entertain.
