I had to do a sudden road trip because of a funeral in Port Macquarie. As I drove back over the range today I ran into a really heavy rain storm at Long Flat, as I drove up the first 15 k of windy stuff the outside temperature guage of the car rapidly went from 7 degrees down to 1 degree in the space of about a kilometer, I came around a corner to be met by about 100 meters of road and roadside totally covered in white. I thought it was hail but as I had to slow to a crawl ( because traction was very poor) I had really small snowflakes land on the windscreen ! I only had the iphone with me so thats the only pic I got and it was as I drove out of it. I came across another small patch a bit further on and as I got to what was probably the highest point the other side of the valley had a patch of white probably 500 meters wide.

hail or snow ?

I grew up in port, long flat seems too low but strange anomoly. If your gauge was 1 degree it very very could have. Looks too fine to be hail

Sago! A cross between hail, sleet and snow

Similar occurance in the Southern Highlands around Bowral on sunday, at first i thought it was hail but it was breaking up as it hit the ground. Very soft to touch but in a ball, less than 1cm across. Kept falling for around 10 minutes

It's graupel snow IMO. We had it in the mountains proper on sunday afternoon also. Came out of very isolated cells that looked like mini storm clouds (i'm sure that isn't the technical names for the clouds).
