Pretty sure I've busted a rib or two taking a hit on the slopes on Sunday so I didn't kill a kid. I've been taking it easy to expediate recovery, but they've started to ache. Anyone got any idea, anecdotal or otherwise, how long they might take to mend so I can go boarding again?

Bugger. I busted a rib boarding some years ago. 2 weeks of pain, then another 2 of discomfort. All up was 6 weeks before I was comfortable being fully active again. And that was with physio. Go see a doc and get an xray

I don't know for certain but I probably fractured a rib along with cartilege damage being shoulder charged going in for a try in the corner. He was an AFL player who didn't know you have to use your arms to tackle in rugby. Like Footey, it was around two weeks of pain and then the occasional reminder when I did something I shouldn't have. I was back playing 7 weeks after the injury. My doc didn't bother with x-rays because he said the treatment was the same for a fracture or for cartilege damage.

Ive broken 6 ribs so far, all in martial arts.

for the first 5 days, Ive had to sit in a chair, angled at 45 degrees, breathe about 30% lung capacity and ban comedies from the household! couldnt even lie down in a bed to sleep.

Each time took around 6 weeks before I could start training again.

there is a good possibilily you may have just torn an intercostal muscle which hopefully may only take 2ish weeks to heal.

i wouldnt recommend seeing a doctor, there's nothing they can do except lighten your wallet

Mmm, not sure if ache is a word I'd use to describe how felt pain when I busted a couple ribs falling of a horse. More like a violent, stabbing pain. My doc offered X-rays but I didn't bother.

yeah not much you can do about cracked ribs - can't plaster cast those babies!

I cracked 3 ribs in a bike stack when I was about 15. yes it hurt to touch, yes it hurt when I sneezed and yes it hurt when I lifted something the wrong way. basically rest, rest and perhaps some anti-inflammatories to reduce the swelling around the area.

BTW - good job on not squashing the kid!

I broke the end of a rib surfing in Mexico and now it sticks out a bit on the end. Hurt for 2 weeks but could still surf. No idea when it "got better".

Ditto for the 6 weeks recovery time. It was more than an ache for me too - but I was in Zermatt...a once in a lifetime experience - so I pushed through and boarded with it. Was not the most pleasant experience of my life. Doing up bindings was the worst being natural and being on my right side. I had to get quite inventive.

Yeah I badly brusied some ribs one time and that was quite severe pain....I was in Japan at the time so called my Dad who's a physio. He told me to man up, as if I had broken my ribs it would be more than just an ache. I just took loads of painkillers throughout my trip - sleeping was a [auto-censor] as it really hurt in the evenings.

Yep, wrapped myself around a tree skiing in Tahoe - didn't get an x-ray but the bruising (rib area was black from armpit to hip) and the inability to breathe suggested they were broken. Ski patrol wanted to take me off on a sled but I skied down. Mine was probably six weeks but after about 2 weeks, like K@os, I was told to man up because there was fresh snow outside. Definitely hurt though.

was hit by a car 3 months before a Japan trip broke some ribs in the back and chest. stopped hurting after 6 weeks and was pretty much healed by 8 weeks. Also broke a collar bone, wrist and fingers. they took a bit longer to heal. Still cant make a fist.

As my father pointed out to me - think about all that juicy tender meat you get when you buy spare ribs from the butcher.......thats the stuff that gets brusied very easily when your ribs flex and this is what hurts like hell everytime you breathe. Add a broken bone into the mix and you will know about it

By the sounds of it I reckon I'm bruised....lucky conditions are shithouse and I'm on office duties for the next week. Next dump of snow, I'll harden up and get back out there

I'm in the same boat after cartwheeling in a high speed triple somersault backflip off a cliff. (Anyone who says I fell in the lift line is a liar, I'm telling ya LOL). Take it easy and the bruising and/or fracture will heal. Bumpy bits will tell you to slow down. Sitting fast into a chairlift, and getting off a chairlift, will remind you that pain hurts. Alcohol though is a known cure - well, how many fall down drunks get hurt?

Should be right in 4 weeks I flew off my snowboard a few years back now doing something stupid landed on my chest after flying for about 5-10m took 3-4 weeks to heal avoid sneezing and coughing it feels like you have a knife in ya chest when ya do also avoid heavy lifting or lifting anything really I was working for a plastering company in Canada at the time so I didn't tell them (didn't wanna lose my job) just worked through the pain but lifting sheets of plaster certainly wouldn't have helped it heal in my case.

Well he did manage one at the very end. Made for difficult reading. Obviously missed that punctuation class at school.
