Our 9 year old son wants to attend ski school next week for 4 days, but he's injured his leg 7 days before the first day. It looked like a muscle injury, its on the outer side of his left thigh. He's had two days bed rest with no improvement, and an x-ray this morning (results later today). Booked in for ultrasound tomorrow. He's on crutches now and can't put weight on his left leg.
Any sports medicine advice about attempting to ski, even if only for the last day or two if a miraculous recovery occurs?
What else should we do? There are four in our group, so three others can still enjoy the trip, but this is his once a year special treat.

Awww... your poor little man
It will all depend on the doctors advice and results of those tests. If he has an injury that will be made worse by trying to attend ski school regardless, then it really is not worth it. The risk of having an injury carry through into adulthood for the sake of a couple of days disappointment is too great.
However if it is not too bad, you may be able to have him tough it out. My 13 yr old rode with recovering injury to his shoulder blade attachments in 3 muscles, but he had been having treatment for 2 weeks and was already on the mend and being allowed back to certain activities. And I rode 3 weeks post op with a shoulder surgery - but I would not recommend that for my child...I was big enough to take the responsibility for that decision and any consequences that arose from hurting it while on the slopes.
If he is unable to participate, and he will have nothing to do, and everyone else wants to get out and ski then it might be kinder to find him someone to stay with where he can be a lounge lizard and watch DVDs all day without pining to go out and ski.
Hope it turns out to be a simple fix.

Let him or the doc make the call. If it hurts too much he is not going to want to ski anyway.
If he does ski, tell the hire place he is coming off an injury and they will set the bindings appropriately. If he can walk ok, but is finding the whole twisting motion a pain, hire him some xc skis or some snow shoes.
Hope he heals up well.

maybe go see a sports doctor, someone who better understands an athlete's desire to recover more quickly than a typical conservative doctor might support

if its a soft flesh injury (cork etc) they'll heal up and the pain will diminish after a week or so. I badly corked my thigh playing oztag a few years ago and it was surprisingly painful and I couldn't run for 2 weeks afterwards.
if its something deeper (bone) then obviously he'll be out for longer.
If it is a fleshy injury and it still hurts too much then he wont want to ski anyway.
alternatively you can give him a cup of cement and tell him to harden up...;-)

How good a skier is he? Once I knew a 12 year old kid who skied most of the season with a broken leg. He'd just put a plastic bag over the cast to keep it dry and ski on one ski. It helped that he was a little Austrian kid whose father was on the national team and our ski school director, so the kid had skills.

Kid has had the Arnica Cream, plenty of rest, compression bandage; now the pain has gone but his leg is wobbly and he's been still using the crutches today. Hopefully he can make it onto the slopes this week. I'll ask at the ski school if there's a way we can assess him.

I really beleive that the visit to the Dr would have provided the answer. Be careful.

Physios are specialists in soft tissue injuries. Even if the pain diminishes or goes, the body's adjustments to it can last in an attempt at compensation which in the long term can be very detrimental if not corrected.
